RWE, a German energy company, has been granted permission to construct a green hydrogen factory in Eemshaven.
An environmental permit was issued by the province of Groningen. RWE’s proposed green hydrogen factory is the largest to have been granted a license in the Netherlands.
Provinces have already issued the first permits for the construction of electrolysers in recent months. With a capacity of 50 megawatts, RWE’s planned factory is the largest of these (MW). BioMCN’s methanol plant and Evonik’s hydrogen peroxide plant, both in Delfzijl, will both receive hydrogen from RWE.
RWE’s hydrogen factory runs on electricity generated by its own Westereems wind farm. The electrolyser will benefit almost entirely from the park’s electricity production, which is now enough to power nearly 150,000 homes.
