Southern California Edison has signed seven contracts totaling 770 megawatts of battery-based energy storage resources to help enhance the reliability needs of the region’s electrical system.
The projects will increase the efficiency of the electrical grid and help solve possible energy shortfalls found in California.
The projects will help to incorporate renewable clean energy into the grid from intermittent wind and solar resources and will also allow the state to change its energy profile, as many large coastal once-through cooling plants are expected to retire in the next three years.

Most of the selected projects are co-located projects as the battery project would use an adjacent solar power plant to charge the battery over the contract period. These projects will be located at the same interconnection point and will be the first of their kind on the grid of California.
