Schneider Electric and Iberdrola join forces to advance process and energy control at the Puertollano green hydrogen plant.

This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to combat climate change and foster energy independence. The Puertollano facility, the largest of its kind in Europe for industrial use, emerges as a key player in Spain’s strategic network of hydrogen plants, aiming to propel the adoption of green hydrogen and decarbonize challenging sectors.

Situated at the forefront of green innovation, the Puertollano plant boasts a robust green hydrogen production system through electrolysis, drawing power from a dedicated 100 MW solar photovoltaic plant. Backed by a 20 MWh lithium-ion battery system, the plant ensures a zero-emission value chain, positioning it as a pioneer in sustainable energy practices.

Acknowledging the critical importance of optimal efficiency, Iberdrola turns to Schneider Electric’s cutting-edge solutions. A standout in their collaboration is the DCS EcoStruxure Control Expert for Aveva System Platform, a state-of-the-art system that seamlessly integrates process control and electrical management. Covering the entire life cycle, this system enhances control and coordination of energy systems, elevating performance, energy efficiency, and operational capabilities.

Emphasizing cyber security, the DCS system complies with IEC62443 standards and provides solutions at the Hot Standby and Safety SIL3 redundancy level. This extends across hardware, software, and multiple integrations with plant applications, ensuring a resilient and secure operational environment.

Leveraging the Aveva PI System, the operational intelligence layer serves as the foundation for advanced data analytics solutions. This innovative approach addresses diverse business models within the hydrogen sector, showcasing Schneider Electric’s commitment to cutting-edge technologies and solutions.

The suite of Schneider Electric solutions implemented at the Puertollano plant becomes a benchmark for future green hydrogen facilities. Iberdrola, by adopting these solutions, is not only enhancing the operational efficiency of the current plant but also establishing a blueprint for the next generation of green hydrogen production facilities.
