The Coega Green Ammonia project has received government backing to expedite construction, which represents a significant advancement in the race towards a just energy transformation in South Africa’s hardest-hit region.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille revealed that the Hive Hydrogen project in Coega, Nelson Mandela Bay, had been registered as a special integrated project at the South Africa Green Hydrogen Summit last week in Cape Town (SIP).
As a result, the Hive Hydrogen project, which will produce 950 000 t of green ammonia annually, will be given priority for implementation and can take a streamlined delivery route with predetermined, condensed regulatory process times.
The executive chairperson of Hive Hydrogen South Africa, Thulani Gcabashe, described obtaining SIP status as a significant accomplishment and expressed excitement about the project’s upcoming exciting phase, which entails close collaboration with several important State-owned Enterprises with the strongest support from the South African government.
