Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, H.E. Dr. B.E. Nzimande, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Innovation, has unveiled South Africa’s Hydrogen Society Roadmap, a blueprint for the country’s future in the hydrogen economy (HSRM).
South Africa’s transition to a hydrogen-based economy will benefit greatly from the HSRM, which is an important first step toward a global hydrogen economy.
When South Africa’s energy and national development goals are met by a successful hydrogen economy, significant infrastructure and skills development is needed to support the deployment of hydrogen energy in a cost-effective manner at scale, which will enable the potential to ensure gender equality within the industry as well as social inclusion in order to combat inequality and unemployment in South Africa, which is a major challenge.
With the HSRM, South Africa’s position as a global leader in the hydrogen economy will be further solidified by incorporating all hydrogen-related technologies from various sectors and industries. This will promote economic and development growth.
All relevant stakeholders, including government agencies, educational institutions, science councils, and private businesses, were involved in the development of the HSRM, which serves as a framework for skill development and the integration of hydrogen-related technologies across the entire value chain. It was decided by the Cabinet in 2007 to include the HSRM in its Hydrogen South Africa Strategy in order to boost the economy of the country.
