Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced a substantial investment of 900 million euros to support ten green hydrogen projects across the country.
These initiatives, spanning regions like Andalusia, Asturias, Aragon, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, and the Basque Country, aim to position Spain as a global benchmark in renewable hydrogen decarbonization.
The ten projects encompass various aspects, including hydrogen production, transportation, and technology development. Sánchez’s vision is to make Spain a key player in the shift to renewable hydrogen, emphasizing a commitment to decarbonization and innovation. The investment aligns with Spain’s broader strategy, as outlined in its post-Covid recovery plan, earmarking a total of 3.1 billion euros for the green hydrogen sector.
The funding will support crucial elements of the hydrogen value chain, including electrolyzer manufacturing, industrial end-use applications, and export initiatives to neighboring countries. Spain’s focus on technology development and integration across sectors highlights a holistic approach to harnessing the potential of green hydrogen.
The investment is expected to create a substantial number of jobs and contribute to Spain’s ambitious target of over 80% renewable electricity by 2030. By supporting these hydrogen projects, Spain aims to significantly reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, leading to a substantial decrease in pollution-related deaths. Additionally, collaboration with China in renewable energy and green hydrogen underscores the global importance of such initiatives.
