Saudi Arabia’s ambition to become a global hub for green hydrogen gained new traction with a memorandum of understanding between Stargate Hydrogen and the Kingdom’s Research, Development, and Innovation Authority (RDI).
The agreement, announced under RDI’s Global Startups Attraction Programme and supported by the Ministry of Investment through Apex Ventures, signals an effort to accelerate technology transfer and strengthen the regional hydrogen value chain.
The collaboration will focus on establishing Stargate Hydrogen KSA, the company’s regional headquarters in Riyadh, and adapting its proprietary electrolyzer technologies for deployment within Saudi Arabia. By working with domestic manufacturers, the partners aim to develop local production capacity for hydrogen equipment, reducing import dependency and supporting the Kingdom’s drive to anchor industrial decarbonization in its emerging energy economy.
Academic engagement is also built into the plan. Stargate will partner with Saudi universities, including King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), to co-develop intellectual property and foster a local research ecosystem around green hydrogen. This aligns with broader national objectives to grow high-value R&D while embedding sustainability into manufacturing and heavy industry.
A joint steering committee will coordinate the initiative, with dedicated operational teams tasked with delivering near-term milestones such as technology localization, workforce training, and pilot projects in industrial settings. Regular workshops with government agencies, academic researchers, and private-sector stakeholders are expected to support alignment across the Kingdom’s hydrogen roadmap.
