VINCI Construction (in collaboration with Cobra IS, a VINCI group company), Técnicas Reunidas, and PowerChina Guizhou Engineering have been chosen by HyDeal Espana, the first industrial entity to implement the vision of the HyDeal Ambition platform, to carry out the technical design, architecture, and supply chain of its first hydrogen production units. These EPC 1 firms will work to develop the most efficient and cost-effective technologies for producing HyDeal Espana’s renewable hydrogen at reasonable costs.

7.4 GW of electrolyzers and 9.5 GW of solar energy

HyDeal Espana, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal, Enagás, Grupo Fertiberia, and DH2 Energy, was announced in February 2022. From facilities in northern Spain, HyDeal Espana will deliver renewable hydrogen to an industrial complex in Asturias. Solar energy will account for 9.5 GW of the total installed capacity, while electrolyzers will account for 7.4 GW. Production will begin in late 2025, with a goal of producing roughly 150,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year by 2026 and 330,000 tonnes by 2030. ArcelorMittal and Grupo Fertiberia, as well as other project participants, have announced plans to purchase 6.6 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen over the next 20 years. VINCI Construction, Técnicas Reunidas, and PowerChina Guizhou Engineering will offer their technical and economic ideas before the end of the year, in partnership with Cobra IS, a VINCI Group subsidiary. HyDeal Espana will validate the final businesses in charge of carrying out the Advanced Design Engineering Project (FEED2) and project implementation after this design phase (EPC). The selected groups will collaborate closely with TSK to design and build HyDeal Espana’s renewable hydrogen production plants. They’ll collaborate with OEMs across the supply chain, especially electrolyzer manufacturers, to assure competitive supply while boosting the European industry.

The reactions of the project’s protagonists and collaborators

“We are happy to be sponsored by four world-class engineering and construction organizations that share our ambition of supplying competitive green hydrogen on a big scale and in record time,” says Thierry Lepercq, President of the joint venture and spokesperson for HyDeal Ambition. This is a significant vote of confidence in the HyDeal concept and excellent news for all energy users in Spain and worldwide who are looking for safe and cost-effective alternatives to fossil fuels at a vital time.” “We are thrilled to have been selected by HyDeal Espana to carry out the first step of this magnificent green hydrogen project,” says Hugues Seutin, Director of the Hydrogen Activity at VINCI Construction. This initiative is critical for Spain’s industrial decarbonization and the establishment of a green hydrogen economy. We are working hard to uncover the technologies and solutions that will help HyDeal Espana realize its goals.” “The world needs more energy and fewer emissions,” says Arturo Crossley, Técnicas Reunidas’ Deputy General Manager, and Commercial and Strategic Director. Green hydrogen is a game-changing energy carrier that will assist achieve climate neutrality by reducing global emissions. It is a privilege for Técnicas Reunidas to be chosen to participate in HyDeal Espana, an initiative that will help position Spain and its industry as a worldwide player in decarbonization and renewable energy generation.

“The green hydrogen age has begun.”

“The era of green hydrogen is here,” says Wang Yuanhui, General Manager of PowerChina Guizhou. By joining in HyDeal Espana, a worldwide effort to promote green hydrogen, PowerChina Guizhou Engineering Co.Ltd. is delighted to be a pioneer of this potential “green hydrogen age.” We will devote all of China’s experience and might to ensuring the project’s success.” “We are happy to be part of this amazing creative initiative that places renewable hydrogen at the core of a low carbon energy future,” says TSK CEO Joaqun Garca. TSK is dedicated to assisting its clients and partners in managing the energy transition and achieving their carbon reduction objectives. This integrated renewable hydrogen hub represents a watershed moment in the development of green hydrogen, long-term energy storage, and decarbonization. TSK has played major roles in the design, engineering, and building of projects incorporating various technologies, renewable energies, and power plants for the past 35 years, based on its experience in the construction of complex energy infrastructure projects. “From hybrids to energy storage,” says the author.
