thyssenkrupp Uhde, a leading engineering company, has joined forces with the OFFSET consortium, led by SwitcH2 B.V., to develop a groundbreaking industrial-scale floating green hydrogen and ammonia project.

This ambitious venture aims to revolutionize the production of clean offshore ammonia, utilizing cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices. In this article, we explore the goals, technology, and potential impact of the project, which represents a significant milestone in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable future.

Addressing climate change is humanity’s greatest challenge, and thyssenkrupp Uhde is committed to being at the forefront of the green transformation. With a focus on innovation and sustainability, thyssenkrupp Uhde seeks to enable businesses to embrace sustainability, reduce carbon footprints, and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy. This commitment has led to the development of their green ammonia technology, which plays a crucial role in the OFFSET project.

The OFFSET consortium, comprising SwitcH2 B.V., BW Offshore Norway AS (BWO), MARIN, TU Delft, and Strohm, is dedicated to advancing sustainable industrial practices. At the heart of the consortium’s vision lies the concept of a floating production and offloading vessel (FPSO) designed for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia. This innovative approach promises to reshape offshore ammonia manufacturing, offering a modular and adaptable solution that aligns with the goal of cleaner energy production.

The collaboration between thyssenkrupp Uhde and the OFFSET Project group marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly future. By combining modern engineering expertise and state-of-the-art technology, the proposed FPSO ammonia plant presents a groundbreaking opportunity to produce ammonia offshore solely from renewable energy sources. This venture represents the convergence of visionary ideas and practical engineering, aimed at driving real change in the energy landscape.

In March 2023, SwitcH2 B.V. achieved Approval in Principle from DNV for its FPSO design principles, validating the feasibility and potential of their renewable ammonia production concept. BWO contributed to the project by developing the topside arrangement, hull, and mooring system design for the FPSO. thyssenkrupp Uhde’s involvement through a Technical Concept Study further fortified the ammonia plant’s foundation, leveraging thyssenkrupp’s uhde® ammonia synthesis technologies.

The project consortium received a Euro 3 million grant from the Dutch government in April 2023, providing crucial support for the advancement of project OFFSET. The consortium’s ultimate objective is to establish a floating hydrogen and/or ammonia production and storage facility, linked to an adjacent wind farm, by 2027. This ambitious timeline underscores the commitment to rapid progress in achieving cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

The collaboration between thyssenkrupp Uhde and the OFFSET consortium marks a transformative step towards greener industrial practices. Through their pioneering industrial-scale floating green hydrogen and ammonia project, the consortium aims to reshape the energy landscape and contribute significantly to the global fight against climate change. With cutting-edge technology and a commitment to sustainability, the OFFSET project represents a beacon of hope in the journey towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.
