Yara Clean Ammonia and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have finalized a time-charter agreement for an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC), slated for delivery in November 2026.
The 40,000 m3 capacity gas carrier, flagged by Japan, represents a collaboration between Yara and NYK that began in 2021 to study the practical application of ammonia-fueled carriers. The vessel will be fitted with a main ammonia dual-fuel two-stroke engine. The ship’s overall length will be 180 meters, with a breadth of 32 meters and a molded depth of 18.45 meters.
Murali Srinivasan, Senior Vice President Commercial at Yara Clean Ammonia, noted the agreement allows Yara to comply with future CO2 emission regulations and ensures customers receive carbon-intensity compliant clean ammonia throughout the supply chain.
NYK has a target of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. Hironobu Watanabe, Managing Executive Officer at NYK, stated that the company has been developing ammonia-fueled vessels because it believes alternative fuels, especially ammonia, are essential to reaching that goal.
