Yeongcheon City in Gyeongsangbuk-do has unveiled plans to construct a biogas-based clean hydrogen production facility, marking a significant stride towards sustainable energy generation and carbon neutrality.
Selected through a public contest by the Ministry of Environment, Yeongcheon’s ambitious project aims to produce and commercialize clean hydrogen by harnessing biogas derived from organic waste, including food and livestock residues. This innovative approach not only addresses waste management challenges but also promotes renewable energy utilization.
With a total investment of 13 billion won, including substantial national funds, Yeongcheon City is set to establish the necessary infrastructure adjacent to the organic waste treatment plant near the Donam-dong Environmental Office by 2025. The project includes the installation of biogas purification and hydrogen reforming facilities, as well as transportation infrastructure such as tube trailers. Additionally, plans are underway to inaugurate a hydrogen charging station next year, leveraging government funding.
The initiative marks a significant milestone as the province currently lacks facilities for clean hydrogen production using biogas. Once operational, the facility is poised to supply hydrogen to nearby charging stations, fostering the growth of the hydrogen economy in the region.
