A major development is underway on Jurong Island as YTL PowerSeraya begins the construction of an $800 million, 600 megawatt (MW) hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant.
The project aims for completion by December 31, 2027, with an initial capability to operate on 50% hydrogen, and future plans to reach 100% hydrogen readiness. Once operational, the plant will be equipped to power approximately 864,000 four-room HDB flats across Singapore.
The Energy Market Authority of Singapore awarded YTL PowerSeraya the contract for this power plant in January 2024 through a centralized process designed to secure the nation’s power infrastructure. This initiative supports Singapore’s goal to lead globally in AI and quantum computing, both of which demand significant power supplies. Dr. Tan See Leng, second minister for trade and industry, highlighted at the opening ceremony that Singapore’s peak demand for electricity is anticipated to grow by 3% to 5% annually in the coming decade, making the completion of this power project crucial.
This development is spearheaded by YTL PowerSeraya, a subsidiary of YTL Power International, under the umbrella of YTL Corporation Berhad—a notable entity on Bursa Malaysia. Partnered with GE Vernova and SEPCOIII, YTL PowerSeraya will employ GE Vernova’s advanced 9 High Efficiency Air Cooled (9HA.01) gas turbines. Known for their efficiency, these turbines are central to the plant’s design.
The announcement of this hydrogen-ready plant aligns with Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW), where multiple projects were unveiled under the country’s energy transition and decarbonization strategy. Singapore plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 through a mix of natural gas, solar, power imports, and low-carbon alternatives.
