Frames is designing a modular and skid-mounted LOHC Storage Plant in collaboration with Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies and MAN Energy Solutions for what will be Europe’s first industrial scale LOHC plant.
The plant in Cologne, located at CHEMPARK Dormagen, Germany, will be able to store 5 tons of hydrogen per day thanks to Hydrogenious’ LOHC (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier) technology. A hydrogen-powered car can typically travel half a million kilometers on 5 tons of hydrogen.
Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies, Frames Group, and MAN Energy Solutions formed a partnership in 2019 to design, supply, and start-up industrial-scale hydrogen storage plants using Hydrogenious’ LOHC technology. MAN Energy Solutions will design the reactor for the plant.
Hydrogen is chemically bonded to the LOHC material benzyl toluene, a thermal oil, in the LOHC Storage Plant. This carrier oil can be transported in standard and existing logistics infrastructures in a manner similar to the delivery of petroleum or diesel. The hydrogen-loaded LOHC will be loaded onto a truck and transported across Europe, including to LOHC Release Plants and hydrogen offtakers in Rotterdam, from the CHEMPARK Dormagen plant.
