Due to water supply concerns, Kallis Energy Investments has declared it would abandon its plan to construct a 6 GW renewable hydrogen facility in Moolawatana, South Australia.
Terry Kallis, the founder of Kallis Energy Investments, stated over the weekend that his company’s 6 GW Moolawatana Green Hydrogen Project will not move forward after a water supply assessment.
“That assessment, which was foreshadowed in the original project announcement, has determined that the environmental and permitting risks associated with water supply and desalination were unacceptable. Hence, the project has been stopped,” Kallis posted on LinkedIn.
On 100,000 hectares immediately east of the northern Flinders Ranges, the Moolawatana Green Hydrogen Project sought to create a combined solar and wind farm, each with up to 3 GW of capacity, which would exclusively power electrolysers. Kallis Energy intended to add a desalination plant at the site and, as Kallis highlighted, had already identified water as a potential obstacle, which was subsequently determined to be insurmountable during the prefeasibility stage.
