It will be the first hospital in Europe to run totally on hydrogen energy. The first visitors to the new Rijnstate hospital in Elst, between Arnhem and Nijmegen, should be able to enter in a year.
The massive hydrogen tank is already operational. “That is built-in by the professional,” explains Ilse Bakker of Berghege Heerkens, a building company. “We concentrate on the structure itself.”
It will be a structure that is unmistakably distinct from others. The insulation must be of good quality, and the energy supply must be dependable. Of course, we don’t want a dark, claustrophobic hospital; instead, we want a welcoming environment with plenty of light and room. This is also occurring, according to Ilse Bakker: “This hospital will also be a pleasant place to visit, with all of the amenities you require. There are plenty of windows and open areas. And they’re prepared for the future.”
