Daimler Truck gives an insight into hydrogen test vehicles

The long-term transition away from internal combustion engines is being pushed on truck makers. The fuel cell is also used by Daimler Truck. It will still take some time before it is prepared for mass manufacturing, though.

Daimler Truck is also utilizing fuel cells for new drives for its trucks. In Wörth, in the southern part of Palatinate, trucks with hydrogen tanks are scheduled to be unveiled on Monday at 11.30 a.m. These are test cars that go on open highways.

The first test fleets should hit the market in the middle of the decade, according to CEO Martin Daum. The fuel cell truck will then enter serial manufacturing in the second half of this decade. He should have a range of roughly 1000 kilometers and two hydrogen tanks.

The EU is pressuring the truck sector to meet legally obligatory climate protection standards. By 2025 and at least 30 percent by 2030, new models shall release carbon dioxide on average at a lower rate. 2019–20 is the reference year for this. There are severe consequences if the conditions are not satisfied.

Plans for a joint factory

Daimler Truck plans to partner with Volvo to develop a fuel cell facility in Weilheim a der Teck, Swabian, to ensure output. There are about 800 employees there. This project is being carried out by the Cellcentric joint venture.

Daimler Truck uses batteries and fuel cells as a transition from traditional drives to new ones. Up to 60% of sales of commercial cars are anticipated to be made by zero-emission vehicles by the end of the decade. The firm, which employs more than 100,000 people, is among the top businesses in its field worldwide.

In order to build a hydrogen charging infrastructure, Daimler Truck is a partner in numerous collaborations. The oil behemoths BP, Shell, and TotalEnergies have agreed to cooperate in the construction of hydrogen filling stations.
