According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE), the country has a leg up on the competition when it comes to producing green hydrogen because of its vast renewable energy production capacity, agriculture-led economic strategy, topography, and geographic location.
MoWE Minister of State for Energy Development Sultan Wali provided an overview of the social and economic benefits of green hydrogen and Ethiopia’s potential to become a producer and user of the fuel at the “Africa Green Hydrogen Forum Ahead of COP27” in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The Minister of State claims that Ethiopia’s abundant hydropower (45,000 MW), geo-thermal (10,000 MW), wind power (100 GW), and solar system supply more than enough renewable energy to meet the need for green hydrogen.
He said that Ethiopia’s ability to manufacture and export green hydrogen was greatly facilitated by the country’s agriculturally-led economic strategy, terrain, geographic location, and alternative ports in neighboring nations.
The Ministry announced that research is underway into numerous renewable energy solutions, including green hydrogen production, to meet the world’s expanding energy needs.
The Ministry of Water and Energy anticipates that Ethiopia will join the African Green Hydrogen Alliance.
