Sunbo Unitec builds Korea’s first green hydrogen plant

For the first time in Korea, Sunbo Unitec has created a water electrolysis facility that can generate 300kW of green hydrogen.

PEM water electrolysis equipment, which transforms the power generated by the Jeju Island wind farm known as Haengwon into hydrogen, was to be delivered to Jeju Island, according to a Sunsun Unitec announcement.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy built this facility as part of a national initiative, and Jeju’s hydrogen filling stations provide the facility’s supply of hydrogen. The 24 hydrogen-powered Nexos may all be charged using the 300kW class.

With a PEM water electrolysis facility, hydrogen may be made from water. Numerous analogous technologies have been created elsewhere, but Sunbo Unitec and Elchemtech were the first to do so in Korea.

According to Sunoni Unitec, the PEM-type water electrolysis facility has the benefit of being able to run steadily even with an inconsistent power source.

Based on its EPC experience in offering one-stop construction such as shipbuilding and onshore plant design and procurement of parts and materials, Sunsun Unitec and Elchemtech constructed the PEM water electrolysis facility.

To encourage commercialization, Elchemtech provides electrolyzers, which are essential technologies, while Seonbo Unitec offers customers engineering, manufacturing, and commissioning of PEM water electrolysis plants.

By moving straight from the factory to test operation, the 300kW water electrolysis equipment that was provided this time was delivered with a warranty for hydrogen output and quality (hydrogen purity of 99.999%).

The demonstration was attended by representatives from Doosan Enerville, Southern Power, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ship & Offshore Plant Research Institute, Korea Electric Power Research Institute, Busan City, Busan Techno Park, etc.
