EDF Group and Abraxas Power have partneed to develop a major green hydrogen and ammonia project in Central Newfoundland, known as the Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation project.

The Exploits Valley project will feature up to 3+ gigawatts of wind capacity to produce green hydrogen and ammonia, key in reducing carbon emissions. This project aims to produce approximately 200,000 tons of hydrogen and 1 million tons of ammonia annually. Plans include construction stretching from 2026 to 2030 and a dedicated port for exporting products globally.

The partnership signifies a collaboration between two major players in the energy transition field. Abraxas, known for tackling hard-to-abate sectors, joins forces with EDF, a leader in low-carbon energy. The collaboration hopes to leverage EDF’s extensive global experience and expertise to achieve significant strides in the energy transition.

Once operational, the project is expected to offset over 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually and inject over CAD$5 billion into Newfoundland’s economy through financial and stakeholder contributions. It is also anticipated to create numerous skilled jobs in the region, fostering both economic and social benefits.
