Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lay the foundation stone for a significant green hydrogen project in Pudimadaka, Anakapalli district of Andhra Pradesh.

This project is noted as one of the incentives provided by the Union government to the state for the ruling TDP’s association with the NDA.

The project is spearheaded by NTPC Green Energy, a subsidiary of NTPC, in collaboration with the New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (NREDCAP). This partnership aims to create a substantial renewable energy portfolio. An estimated investment of ₹1.87 lakh crore will be dedicated to this initiative. The first phase alone will see an infusion of ₹80,000 crore, with a target completion date set for April-May 2027.

Aiming to revolutionize the renewable energy landscape of Andhra Pradesh, the venture will feature 10 GW of pumped hydro storage. It also plans to produce 0.5 million metric tonnes annually of derivatives. Complementing these efforts will be 25 GW of solar, wind, and hybrid power installations. This ambitious project is expected to generate 1.06 lakh jobs and contribute economic benefits worth ₹20,620 crore to the region over the next quarter-century.

This initiative is integral to Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy. It supports the state’s targets for renewable energy production over the next five years, including 78.50 GW solar, 35 GW wind, 22 GW pumped hydro storage, and the production of 1.5 MMTPA green hydrogen. On a daily basis, the facility will produce 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen, signifying a robust step towards India’s green hydrogen aspirations.

NTPC plans to team up with global companies such as Japan’s Toyo Engineering Corporation, Norway’s Getec AS, and Australia’s Fortescue for expertise and support in the fulfillment of its green hydrogen objectives.
