According to Sunshine Hydro, an integrated project incorporating pumped storage and hydrogen generation facilities is planned for central Queensland, Australia.

According to the business, this Flavian super hybrid project is a “global first” and is being developed within Central Queensland’s Renewable Energy Zone (REZ). Sunshine Hydro stated that it had acquired the land and conducted comprehensive feasibility investigations. It stated that it intends to make a final investment decision in 2025 and begin construction in 2028.

The Flavian superhybrid design will have 600MW of pumped hydro storage capable of operating for 18 hours at full capacity, 300MW of hydrogen generation, 50MW of liquefaction, 50MW hydrogen fuel cell, and 1.8GW of additional wind power. The project is intended to reduce carbon emissions by an average of 4 million tons per year.

Additionally, the project may improve water security by increasing the volume of water stored and the capacity of a regional desalination plant.

Additionally, it is planned to promote the development of 1.8GW of new wind energy capacity across Queensland, Sunshine Hydro added, increasing the combined initiative’s projected capital investment value to A$5.5 billion ($3.94 billion).

The Flavian super hybrid will generate 500 full-time employment during construction and 60 full-time jobs once operating, with the pumped hydro and hydrogen generating facilities each employing 60 full-time personnel.

According to Sunshine Hydro Chairman Michael Myer, “the combination of long-duration pumped hydro and the rapid response of PEM electrolyzers can provide grid services that are unmatched.”

Sunshine Hydro and its partners are developing three similar-sized superhybrid projects in the Central Queensland REZ.

Sunshine Hydro has worked with BMRG and Gidarjil Development Corporation to address issues related to planning, education and training, employment, cultural heritage, and conservation. Sunshine Hydro and Energy Estate, its shareholder and strategic partner, are co-developing the ecosystem that will include the three superhybrids.

Energy Estate is an Australian developer of large-scale renewable energy, energy storage, and green hydrogen projects. Energy Estate is focused on long-term energy storage solutions and is currently developing the 500MW Dungowan Pumped Hydro Storage Power Plant in the New England Regional Economic Zone in New South Wales (with Walcha Energy).
