Siemens Gamesa has closed its Somozas (La Coruña) and Cuenca plants and will present a collective dismissal agreement for up to 266 employees, 215 in Somozas and 51 in Cuenca. The closure of the Somozas factory is a result of a lack of orders for the SG 2.X-114 model produced at the plant, and because it would be unable to competitively produce larger blade models demanded by the market. Vattenfall and Kaunis Iron have signed a letter of intent to develop fossil-free and electrified mining operations at the iron ore mine in Pajala, Sweden. The collaboration means finding business solutions to reduce the need for fossil fuels in the mining operations. SunPower will close SunPower Manufacturing Oregon, its solar panel manufacturing plant in Hillsboro, Oregon. The decision to close the plant will impact approximately 170 employees. SunPower will provide all impacted employees with comprehensive separation packages, including severance, work transition assistance and six months of COBRA for continuation of health insurance coverage. “We made the difficult but necessary decision to close our plant after careful evaluation and the change in focus of our business over recent months. Distributed Solar Development (DSD) has acquired a three-project, 17 MW community solar portfolio from Source Renewables, a New York State developer focused on community solar assets. The three projects, one of which includes solar and storage, were developed by Source Renewables from greenfield, and are expected to reach commercial operation next summer. “DSD was drawn to the Source Renewables team by their focused and disciplined approach to solar development, unique entrepreneurial strategy, and capability for managing community solar assets once operational. Clearway Energy Group has started construction on Mesquite Sky, a 345 megawatt (MW) wind farm in Callahan County, Texas. Baltic Power, subsidiary of Polish energy company PKN Orlen, has hired offshore wind consultancy firm OWC as technical advisor to its 1.2 GW offshore wind development in the Baltic Sea. PKN Orlen, through its subsidiary Baltic Power, holds a license to build wind farms in the Baltic Sea with a maximum total capacity of up to 1.2 GW. The area covers approximately 131 square kilometres located some 23 kilometres off Choczewo and Łeba. Wärtsilä will supply two large-scale biogas upgrading plants to different locations in Denmark. The order was placed by Nature Energy. By injecting biomethane – the end product of upgraded biogas – to the gas grid, Denmark will be taking an important step towards its stated ambition of becoming a climate neutral and fossil-free nation. The agreement with Wärtsilä dates back to early 2019, but the project was delayed because of permit applications.
