Broad Reach Power has acquired the 25-megawatt (MW)/100-megawatt-hour (MWh) front-of-the-meter Cascade Energy Storage project located outside of Stockton, California from a subsidiary of Enel. Cascade had been developed by Enel and was selected by PG&E to provide resource adequacy under a 20-year agreement signed in 2017. “California’s expansive push towards a carbon free grid, largely through wind and solar generation, makes energy storage a critical component of the grid’s infrastructure. Cascade marks the first of several projects that will allow Broad Reach to help California operate the grid safely and reliably as more renewable generating sources come online. We are…
SSE Renewables and Equinor, the joint venture partners co-developing the 3.6GW Dogger Bank wind farm in the North Sea, have signed 15-year offtake Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) for the first two phases of the world’s largest offshore wind farm. Separate PPAs for a total of 2.4GW across both Dogger Bank wind farm A and B have been concluded with external offtakers Ørsted (40% share) and Shell Energy Europe (20% share), and with sponsor offtakers Danske Commodities (20% share) on behalf of Equinor and SSE Energy Supply (20% share) on behalf of SSE Renewables. The agreements are subject to financial close…
JDR Cables has contracted the multi-purpose offshore vessel Olympic Commander equipped with a 28 meter-long Safeway Seagull type walk-to-work gangway system, has been deployed for the efficient transfer of people and goods during a maintenance campaign at the Sandbank wind farm in the German North Sea. The presence of a smart Safeway A-Frame construction at the boom tip of the Seagull gangway also allows the operator to switch from People Transfer Mode to Cargo Transfer Mode, activating a lift capacity of 1,000 kg. The Sandbank offshore wind farm has been finalized in 2017 and is located 90 kilometers off the…
SSE Renewables has hired Pert-Bruce Construction to carry out the works on the Seagreen wind farm operations and maintenance base to be located at Montrose Port. Located at the Port’s South Quay, the base will include an operations building, repurposed warehouse, communications tower, and a pontoon for crew transfer vessels travelling to the Seagreen wind farm site 27km off the Angus coast. Work on the operations building and repurposed warehouse is scheduled to take around a year and will all be carried out by Pert-Bruce and several local subcontractors. The operations building was previously used by an oil industry supply…
Silixa has launched Carina CarbonSecure, a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) based solution for continuous or on-demand monitoring of all stages of carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations. The new solution offers offshore and on-land operators the necessary monitoring measures with a reduced cost and environmental impact of their CCS facilities. The solution enables operators to provide the assurance to regulators and communities necessary to expand CCS adoption worldwide. “CCS is a key component of the energy transition and plays an essential role in achieving international emissions targets. Studies from both the IPCC and the IEA recommend a renewed focus on…
A new project led by the National Oceanography Centre to develop a system to improve the efficiency of offshore renewable energy generation and help develop the Blue Economy has been awarded funding from Innovate UK’s Sustainable Innovation Fund. Submarine High-fidelity Active-monitoring of Renewable energy Cables (SHARC) aims to improve the operational efficiency of offshore renewable energy generation by addressing failure management of critical subsea infrastructure, in this case submarine cables. Between 2014 and 2017, recorded cable failures across UK sites alone led to a cumulative loss of £227 million, highlighting the importance of innovations to improve cable failure-management strategies. Reducing…
Enel, an energy utility company, intends to accelerate the energy transition, alongside sustainable and profitable growth to create significant value shared with all stakeholders. The group expects to mobilize investments of €190 billion in the 2021-2030 period, boosting decarbonization, electrification of consumption and platforms to create sustainable shared value for all stakeholders and profitability over the medium and long term. Enel Group implements two business models: the traditional one, called “Ownership”, where digital platforms are a business enhancer supporting investment profitability, and the “Stewardship” model, which catalyzes third-party investments in partnership with Enel or where platforms are a business generator.…
