Chinese investors see opportunities for greater profits in companies that manufacture or use green hydrogen, a clean energy source that most governments believe will help them fulfill mid-century climate targets. So far, the sector has provided a safe haven from government crackdowns on technology and education firms, which Beijing accuses of aggravating inequality and raising financial risk. As China tightens controls, industries that drive growth through innovation and technology are expected to earn support. The sector is gaining as local governments, including as Beijing and Inner Mongolia, implement programs to cultivate green hydrogen enterprises in order to meet net-zero ambitions.…
Advanced Structural Technologies (AST) has obtained the Department of Transportation’s certification UN ISO 11119-2 to design and manufacture its cylinders for high-pressure hydrogen gas storage, for worldwide usage. The new large diameter hydrogen storage vessels will be sold under the name H2-MAXTM to signify its unique product characteristics, particularly its unique faster and complete filling capability. H2-MAX cylinders are designed for hydrogen storage in various applications for zero-emission and sustainable mobility solutions with service pressure of 350 bar (5,076 psi). “The large diameter of the H2-MAX allows for fewer cylinders, valves, and PRDs; thus, minimizing potential leak points due to…
H3-KOREA, a South Korean hydrogen technology startup, has paved the way for exports of small homegrown generators that use water electrolysis technologies to produce eco-friendly hydrogen at a low cost without the use of expensive metals such as platinum or iridium separators and catalysts. Due to a shortage of power transmission infrastructure, H3-KOREA teamed with Nexon Star, a domestic trade company, to sell small green hydrogen generators to Malaysia’s island people who have consumed electricity by turning their own generators using fossil fuels. Beginning with a single generator with a capacity of five kilowatt-hours (kWh) in December, the two businesses…
Wintershall Dea and VNG AG will cooperate in the field of hydrogen in the future, and are planning to build a facility to produce climate-friendly ‘turquoise’ hydrogen as a first step. The thermal methane pyrolysis process used by HiiROC, in which both companies recently invested, is to be used and further developed for a specific application together with the facility manufacturer. According to current plans, the pilot facility will go into operation in 2023 and have a nominal capacity of 400 kg of hydrogen per day (equivalent to an annual energy output of almost 5 GWh). This will make the…
As part of its national hydrogen strategy, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will grant significant funding for three critical hydrogen initiatives. The goal is to make Germany’s transition to a hydrogen economy easier over a four-year period. Three projects have been chosen for funding: serial manufacture of large-scale water electrolysers (H2Giga), offshore production of hydrogen and secondary products (H2Mare), and hydrogen mobility technology (TransHyDE). The Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) is one of the important partners striving to advance Germany’s hydrogen economy, and it now has an additional €2.3m ($2.69m) to test new green hydrogen…
Inner Mongolia, a Chinese area, has approved a large power plant that would use solar and wind to make green hydrogen. Inner Mongolia’s Energy Administration has approved a cluster of facilities in the cities of Ordos and Baotou that will employ 1.85 gigatonnes of solar and 370 megawatts of wind to produce 66,900 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, according to a report by the Hydrogen Energy Industry Promotion Association. The group stated that construction will begin in October and that the projects will be operational by mid-2023, without revealing the cost or the developers. The project, which would produce…
Lykke Friis, the former Danish Minister of Energy, has joined the Board of Directors of Blue World Technologies. Lykke Friis, the former Danish Minister of Climate, Energy, and Gender Equality, was elected to the Board of Directors of Blue World Technologies at an extraordinary general assembly, where she will support the company’s journey toward providing a strong green alternative to combustion engines and diesel generators for industries around the world. “We are very pleased to announce that Lykke Friis has entered our Board of Directors. We have for some time now been in contact with her, as we see her…
Howden has delivered three hydrogen compressors to Hypower for use in the world’s largest hydrogen refueling station (HRS), the Beijing Daxing HRS in China. The refueling station received Howden’s hydrogen diaphragm compressor packages, and Howden’s strong brand reputation, high product quality, dependability, and technological strength in the hydrogen industry were critical to the contract’s success. The Daxing HRS can create 4.8 tonnes of hydrogen per day and refill up to 600 hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, including large vehicles like trucks and buses. The Daxing HRS is located within the 200,000-square-meter Beijing International Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Zone. The Howden team in…
SWITCH and All American Marine launch world’s first commercial 100% hydrogen powered vessel
All American Marine (AAM) and the vessel owner SWITCH Maritime (SWITCH) announced the launch and operating trials of Sea Change, a 70-foot, 75-passenger zero-emissions, hydrogen fuel cell-powered, electric-drive ferry that will operate in the California Bay Area. This will be the first hydrogen fuel cell vessel in the United States, marking a watershed moment in the marine industry’s shift to a more sustainable future. The ferry was designed and built to illustrate a commercialization path for zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell maritime technologies. While the US Coast Guard is currently working on approving hydrogen fuel systems for marine vessels, the finished…
ITM Power has informed that the Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy, and the Environment launched the UK Government’s Hydrogen Strategy at an event to officially open ITM Power’s new factory in Sheffield’s Bessemer Park. The ITM Power Gigafactory, which has a capacity of 1,000MW (1GW) of electrolysis equipment per year, began operations in January of this year. The plant presently employs approximately 320 people, with additional staffing planned as the facility ramps up to capacity. The company makes electrolyzers, which use renewable energy to separate water into its constituent molecules of hydrogen and oxygen. The…
