SSE has made a final investment decision for the 103-turbine, 443MW Viking onshore wind farm, located in Shetland. Viking is wholly owned by SSE Renewables having been developed in partnership with Viking Energy Shetland. Once built it will be the largest onshore wind farm in the UK in terms of annual electricity output, which is expected to be around 1.9TWh each year, therefore playing a vital role in contributing towards the UK and Scotland’s net-zero targets. SSE now awaits the outcome of the consultation on Ofgem’s minded-to position to approve a 600MW transmission connection from Shetland to the GB mainland, expected in July 2020. Final approval from Ofgem was…
Færøysund live fish carrier is set to become one of the most environmentally friendly vessels of its kind, with the supply of ABB’s power and energy system. As the first live fish carrier to feature ABB hybrid power and propulsion solution with integral energy storage, Færøysund responds to a wider green shift in the maritime industry, with consumers demanding greater accountability in the food supply chain. The 77 meters-long diesel-electric vessel is being built at the Aas Mek. Verksted shipyard in Vestnes, Norway, for Nova Sea Service, one of Norway’s largest producers of Atlantic farmed salmon. Due delivery in September…
SEAI has awarded €1 million to Irish companies and research institutions to carry out energy research projects in the areas of smart energy systems and offshore renewable energy. Funding for Irish participants is provided by SEAI through the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, with additional funding leveraged from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. Irish researchers will collaborate with companies and research institutions across Europe on seven new projects. Geronimo Energy (Geronimo), a National Grid company, has started construction of two Michigan solar projects for which Consumers Energy (Consumers) previously executed Power Purchase Agreements (PPA). The projects, Bingham and Temperance, are part of a solar portfolio called MiSolar Portfolio and are located in Clinton and Monroe counties, respectively. Both projects are expected to begin operations by the end of this year. Geronimo has contracted with Michigan-based Engineering, Construction, and Procurement (EPC) contractor, J. Ranck Electric (JRE), to construct the projects. “We look forward to furthering Geronimo’s commitment to the state of Michigan. Solar projects like these are not possible…
New Energy Equity (NEE) has teamed up with New Resource Solutions (NRS) and Solscient Energy (Solscient) to complete a 789 kW ground-mounted solar array for Hicksville Public Schools. The solar system is expected to produce more than 30,000 MWh over the life of the project, the energy equivalent of taking over 4,000 cars off the road for a year. The system will be owned by Powell Associates based in Aspen, Colorado. The project is part of a series of clean energy transformations made by Hicksville Schools over the past 10 years. “This project is one our district has researched for…
Neighborhood Sun has partnered with Soltage to bring a community solar project to central and south Jersey. The 3.1 megawatt Tri-County Solar Farm will primarily serve low and moderate income PSE&G customers in Camden, Mercer and Burlington counties. It is expected to be among the first community solar projects in New Jersey. “From day one we’ve been committed to bringing solar to everyone, not just the select few, so we’re thrilled that we get to help people in under-served communities in New Jersey save money while supporting a brand new solar farm in their neighborhood.”Gary Skulnik, CEO of Neighborhood Sun.…
A multi-million pound fund has been set up in Scotland to help the energy sector recover from the dual economic impacts of COVID-19 and the oil and gas price crash. The £62 million Energy Transition Fund will support businesses in the oil, gas and energy sectors over the next five years as they grow and diversify and will help attract private sector investment in the region. The investment, with a focus on the North East, underpins the region’s ambitions to become a world leader in the transition to net zero, helping Scotland meet its ambitious targets on climate change. Snam has launched its inaugural €500 million Transition Bond, whose proceeds will be used to finance projects in the energy transition, known as the Eligible Projects. The issuance, which is reserved to institutional investors, reached more than three times over-subscription by high quality and geographically diversified institutional investors. The success of our first Transition Bond, a market in which we are a global frontrunner, is a sign of the market’s trust in our energy transition initiatives, and encourages us to proceed along this path with even greater determination. Sustainable finance is a pillar of Snam’s strategy and an essential contributor…
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has completed a supplement to its draft environmental analysis of the proposed Vineyard Wind I offshore energy project and opened it for public comment. Vineyard Wind is proposing an 800 megawatt wind energy project offshore Massachusetts. The proposed project would be located approximately 12 nautical miles offshore Martha’s Vineyard and 12 nautical miles offshore Nantucket in the northern portion of its lease area. BOEM published a Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Vineyard Wind I project in December 2018 and received comments from a wide variety of stakeholders, including state and local…
Sonnedix and Statkraft have signed a 10-year solar-as-produced power purchase agreement (PPA). Sonnedix will supply Statkraft with an average of around 100 GWh/year of green electricity from 2021 to 2031. The solar PV plant will be located in Badajoz, in southwest Spain and this is Sonnedix’s first PPA for a grid-parity project in Spain. “This transaction is further testament to Sonnedix’s commitment to the Spanish market, as we continue to actively seek opportunities to expand our platform in the country, through the development, acquisition and operation of projects, for the long term.
