Gen2 Energy, a Norwegian energy company, and Provaris Energy, a provider of hydrogen storage and shipping solutions, have joined forces in a collaboration agreement to conduct a prefeasibility study.

The study aims to assess the technical and economic feasibility of producing and supplying compressed green hydrogen from the Åfjord hydrogen project to European ports using Provaris’ innovative marine storage and shipping solution.

The collaboration between Gen2 Energy and Provaris Energy seeks to showcase the viability of Provaris’ unique solution in facilitating the production and transportation of large-scale hydrogen from the Åfjord project. The partnership aims to leverage the synergies between the two companies’ approaches, particularly focusing on compression as an energy-efficient method for transporting green hydrogen. Additionally, the collaboration aims to highlight Norway’s role in meeting the increasing demand for pipeline-ready, gaseous green hydrogen in European ports, aligning with the ambitious REPowerEU target of achieving 10 million tonnes of hydrogen production by 2030.

Provaris Energy has made significant advancements in developing a portfolio of hydrogen shipping and storage solutions. The company has received approval in principle from ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) for two sizes of GH2 carriers and a floating storage unit. This recognition demonstrates the credibility and potential of Provaris’ technology in the hydrogen transportation sector.

The prefeasibility study conducted by Gen2 Energy and Provaris Energy will play a crucial role in determining the technical and economic viability of utilizing Provaris’ marine storage and shipping solution for the transportation of compressed green hydrogen from the Åfjord project to European ports. The study will assess factors such as infrastructure requirements, cost-effectiveness, environmental impact, and scalability of the proposed solution. The findings of the study will provide valuable insights into the feasibility and potential challenges associated with implementing large-scale hydrogen transportation projects.

The development and adoption of efficient hydrogen transportation solutions are key to realizing the full potential of hydrogen as a clean and sustainable energy source. By enabling the transport of green hydrogen to European ports, the collaboration between Gen2 Energy and Provaris Energy can contribute to the decarbonization efforts in the maritime sector and support the transition to a greener and more sustainable energy future.
