The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has made a significant amendment to the guidelines for the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme.

The available capacity for bidding has been increased from 550,000 metric tonnes (MT) per annum to 750,000 MT per annum. This substantial increase reflects the government’s proactive approach to addressing the growing demand for green ammonia and advancing India’s commitment to sustainable energy.

Initially, Tranche I of Mode-2A under the SIGHT Programme allowed for a bidding capacity of 550,000 MT per annum of green ammonia. This capacity has now been raised to 750,000 MT per annum, indicating a strategic move by the MNRE to scale up production. The flexibility to further enhance this capacity based on market demand underscores the government’s responsiveness and adaptability in supporting the green hydrogen sector.

Green ammonia, produced using renewable energy sources, is seen as a pivotal element in reducing carbon emissions across various sectors, including agriculture, industry, and transportation. The increased capacity for green ammonia production aligns with India’s broader environmental goals, particularly the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the transition to a sustainable energy future. This amendment is a clear signal of the government’s intent to foster greater participation from industry players and to cultivate an environment that encourages innovation and growth in the green energy sector.

The agricultural sector stands to benefit significantly from this increase in green ammonia production. Ammonia is a critical component in the production of fertilizers, and the shift to green ammonia can considerably reduce the carbon footprint associated with fertilizer production. This move supports more sustainable agricultural practices, aligning with global efforts to promote environmentally friendly farming techniques.

The decision to potentially issue subsequent tranches based on demand highlights the government’s dynamic management approach. This strategy ensures that the supply of green ammonia can adapt to the evolving needs of the market, promoting stability and sustained growth within the green hydrogen ecosystem. Moreover, this amendment is likely to attract more investment into the sector, drive technological advancements, and position India as a leading player in the global green hydrogen market.

The amendment to the SIGHT Programme’s scheme guidelines represents a strategic enhancement of India’s green hydrogen mission. By increasing the bidding capacity for green ammonia production, the MNRE is paving the way for a robust and dynamic green energy landscape. This development not only supports India’s environmental objectives but also strengthens its position in the global renewable energy market.

The Minister of New and Renewable Energy’s approval of this amendment underscores the high level of importance placed on advancing green hydrogen and ammonia initiatives. This move is expected to attract more investment, foster technological innovation, and bolster India’s position as a global leader in green hydrogen production.
