Jordan is poised to unveil a new strategy for green hydrogen projects as part of its ambitious renewable energy vision aimed at reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

The Jordanian government aims to position the country as a regional hub for exporting green energy, capitalizing on the favorable conditions for renewable energy projects. The strategy, set to be approved and announced in the third quarter of this year, seeks to expand the utilization of clean energy and increase its contribution to Jordan’s energy mix.

Hassan Al-Hayari, Assistant Secretary General of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, highlighted the significant progress made in the country’s renewable energy sector. Over the past few years, Jordan has witnessed substantial growth in solar and wind energy production, reaching 2.6 GW, accounting for approximately 27 percent of the energy mix by the end of 2022. With a determined focus, the government aims to accelerate these efforts, targeting a renewable energy share of 50 percent.

By embracing green hydrogen projects, Jordan aims to capitalize on its renewable energy potential and enhance its energy diversification strategy. Green hydrogen, produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable electricity, offers a versatile energy carrier that can be utilized across various sectors, including transportation, industry, and power generation. With its abundant solar and wind resources, Jordan possesses the key ingredients to foster a thriving green hydrogen industry.

The forthcoming green hydrogen strategy underscores Jordan’s commitment to sustainable development and transition toward a low-carbon economy. By harnessing the power of renewable energy and advancing the adoption of green hydrogen, the country can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and foster economic growth through the creation of new industries and job opportunities.

Furthermore, Jordan’s aspirations to become a regional center for green energy exports align with the growing global demand for clean and sustainable solutions. The export potential of green energy, particularly green hydrogen, can contribute to Jordan’s economic development, strengthen energy partnerships with neighboring countries, and position the nation as a leader in the renewable energy sector.
