The City of Maricá, located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has taken a step towards sustainable urban mobility with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with HYFIT from France and Ydrogênio from Brazil.

The agreement, celebrated during the 8th Brazil-France Economic Forum, paves the way for the production of electric-hydrogen hybrid buses, marking a milestone in the city’s commitment to renewable energy and eco-friendly transportation solutions.

The primary goal of the MoU is to establish a partnership for the development and production of electric-hydrogen hybrid buses, a promising initiative that aligns with Maricá’s vision of sustainable urban transport. By leveraging the expertise of private companies from Brazil and France, the municipality aims to transition towards a cleaner and greener public transportation system, reducing carbon emissions and fostering environmental sustainability.

The electric-hydrogen hybrid buses represent a cutting-edge technology that combines electric propulsion with hydrogen fuel cells, offering a cleaner and more efficient alternative to traditional diesel buses. These buses utilize hydrogen as a clean energy source, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to air quality improvement. The collaboration between Maricá, HYFIT, and Ydrogênio highlights the potential of hydrogen-powered vehicles in revolutionizing urban mobility.

The introduction of electric-hydrogen hybrid buses holds immense potential for Maricá and beyond. By incorporating eco-friendly transportation solutions into its municipal fleet, Maricá aims to set an example for sustainable urban development in Brazil. The adoption of hydrogen-powered buses not only reduces air pollution and mitigates climate change but also stimulates economic growth and job creation in the renewable energy sector.

The collaboration between Maricá and France underscores the importance of international partnerships in advancing hydrogen energy research and development. With France leading research into natural hydrogen reserves, the partnership opens avenues for knowledge exchange and technological innovation.
