Saudi Arabia’s NEOM Green Hydrogen Company’s ambitious project is progressing rapidly, with 80% of construction completed across various sites including a green hydrogen facility, wind garden, solar farm, and transmission grid in the emerging city of Oxagon.

This substantial completion rate signals significant momentum towards the project’s projected operational commencement by the end of 2026. Upon completion, the plant is poised to become the largest in the world, producing up to 600 tonnes of hydrogen daily, a crucial step in the global energy transition toward zero-carbon fuels.

The NEOM Green Hydrogen Company represents a strategic collaboration among Saudi Arabia’s utilities giant Acwa Power, the American corporation Air Products, and NEOM, the entity spearheading Saudi Arabia’s futuristic urban development. The project aligns with the country’s Vision 2030, an economic reform initiative aimed at diversifying the kingdom’s economy and positioning it as a leader in clean energy.

Key infrastructural components such as wind turbines, hydrogen storage vessels, and electrolysers are currently being installed. This concerted effort ensures the alignment of the site’s infrastructure with the project’s ambitious energy capacity of 4 GW from solar and wind sources set to be realized by mid-2026. The milestone of first ammonia product availability is expected by 2027, marking a critical development in the plant’s operational timeline.

Experts view this facility as a potential benchmark for future developments in the green hydrogen sector, with its focus on sustainability and technological scale. By leveraging its substantial renewable power resources, the NEOM project is designed to meet growing global demands for hydrogen, offering a viable path to decarbonizing various sectors such as transportation and industrial manufacturing. Moreover, this venture highlights Saudi Arabia’s strategic pivot in harnessing its geographical advantages for solar and wind power generation, crucial to its economic sustainability in a future less reliant on fossil fuels.
