The Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rhineland is nearing completion of Europe’s largest PEM electrolysis (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) for the development of green hydrogen.

The main technologies needed are small, powerful rotors and safe tanks, which are currently being developed by experts at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP, BTU Cottbus, and an industrial partner.

This test is to measure the operational costs of comparable diesel and electric buses. The bus accommodates 43 adults and 31 people who stand.

It is believed to be just the second hydrogen station in the world, after one in Halle, Belgium.

The station is scheduled to open in the second half of 2021 and will provide green hydrogen to large vehicles such as buses, refuse trucks, and fire engines.
