Port of Vigo receives €2.4M EU funds for hydrogen station

The initiative to build a hydrogen station at the Bouzas terminal, which is being directed by the Port of Vigo, has received 2.4 million euros from the EuropeanNext Generation funding of the European Union.

According to a statement from the Olympic Port Authority, the Port directs and oversees a project that will enable Galicia to not only have the first public green hydrogen station, but also to use this fuel for industrial, maritime, and land transportation.

This initiative will be developed in conjunction with other promoters such as Univergy, Soltec Ingenieros, ANFACO, and Quantum Group within the framework of its sustainable blue growth strategy, as well as with the assistance of additional organizations such as Neuwalme, Exportrends, Energylab, CTAG, Aclunaga, Aister, Botamavi, the University of Vigo, Unvi, and the Association of Service Station Entrepreneurs of Pontevedra (AEESP).

In a press conference, the president of the port authority, Jess Vázquez Almuia, recalled that the project received a 2.4 million euro grant “thanks to the work and generosity of a magnificent team” after being chosen as the seventh best valued in Spain out of more than a hundred applications submitted for the first call for Pioneering and Singular Hydrogen Projects.

The CEO of the business Julio Verne Hydrogen Port of Vigo, Julio Hidalgo, a representative of the project’s supporters, said in a statement that the initiative is “exciting and very essential for Galicia” because it will enable the production of green hydrogen from only 100% renewable sources.

In the first stage, a 1.4 MW alkaline electrolyzer fueled by renewable energy sources will be utilized for this. It can produce 200 tons of hydrogen annually, which is enough to refuel 40 heavy trucks.

The 6.5 million euro initiative, which would be a pioneer in the production and local distribution of green hydrogen, is anticipated to materialize in 2024.
