Renewable hydrogen facility close to Waroona step closer to production

With the signing of a significant, 15-year water supply agreement with Water Corporation, a renewable hydrogen plant close to Waroona is on the verge of going into production.

Bristol Springs Green Hydrogen Project, a low-cost renewable hydrogen plant in Australia, is being developed by Frontier Energy in Western Australia. Production is planned to commence in 2025 with Stage One production forecast at roughly 4.4 million kg of renewable hydrogen each year, with the potential to expand greatly as demand for renewable hydrogen continues to develop.

Water is a crucial component of renewable, or “green,” hydrogen, which is produced by electrolyzing water to separate its hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity. With any extra renewable energy being sold into the grid, Frontier Energy’s 114 MW industrial solar farm will power the electrolysers for the first stage of the Bristol Springs Project.

The 15-year arrangement represents Water Corporation’s first commercial supply contract to a renewable hydrogen facility, supporting the McGowan Government’s pipeline of hydrogen investment. The project’s supply will be supported by future expansions to the capacity of the existing scheme.

Over 300 new employment are anticipated to be created during construction for the Bristol Springs Project, and an additional 50 jobs are anticipated throughout production. Transport, industrial feedstock, electricity generation, and blending with natural gas are just a few applications for renewable hydrogen.

After the publication of the Renewable Hydrogen Strategy in 2019, the McGowan Government pledged a total of $162.5 million to promote the growth of the renewable hydrogen industry in Western Australia.
