Rheinmetall has secured a significant order for cathode and shut-off valves in the low double-digit million euro range from a prominent player in Europe’s heavy-duty transport fuel cell sector.

This achievement marks the sixth series customer for cathode valves and boosts the 2023 business tally in this domain to approximately €50 million. This year alone, Rheinmetall has already locked in about €200 million in fuel cell component deals. This order reaffirms the strategic potential of hydrogen components for Rheinmetall’s newly established Hydrogen Products and Technology unit. The order, which involves the supply of mid-six-digit cathode valves, underscores Rheinmetall’s prowess in optimizing components for diverse spaces and applications.

The cathode valves serve as pivotal elements in fuel cell stacks, managing air flows while ensuring peak efficiency and minimal leakage. The technology’s value has been validated through stringent testing and sample deliveries since 2019, culminating in a 2026 production commencement. This production, spanning five years, will unfold at Rheinmetall’s Berlin facility, where advanced production lines will facilitate increased series output. This operational expansion is a testament to Rheinmetall’s commitment to driving modern, environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

The order aligns seamlessly with Germany’s hydrogen initiative, with Rheinmetall serving as an industrial partner for the Hydrogen Technology Innovation and Technology Center in Duisburg. This strategic move positions Rheinmetall at the forefront of developing high-quality hydrogen products, enabling efficient and reliable fuel cell applications. The company’s engagement extends beyond this order, with continuous dialogues underway for both mobile and stationary fuel cell technology applications. These discussions promise to unveil further business opportunities, solidifying Rheinmetall’s role in shaping the future of sustainable transportation.
