Wärtsilä Power-to-X Plant Deal to Transform Finnish Energy Landscape

Wärtsilä is poised to orchestrate the front-end engineering design (FEED) for a groundbreaking Power-to-X plant, set to redefine Finland’s energy landscape. This visionary endeavor is orchestrated in collaboration with Koppö Energia Oy, a joint venture between Germany’s Prime Green Energy Infrastructure Fund and CPC Finland Oy.

The plant, nestled in the idyllic confines of Kristinestad, Finland, will mark a monumental leap toward sustainable energy transition.

At the heart of this pioneering project lies a Power-to-X plant, a harbinger of Finland’s sustainable energy transformation. This facility, wielding an awe-inspiring capacity of 200 MW, will undertake the remarkable feat of converting green electricity into both hydrogen and sustainable liquefied synthetic methane (LSM). The envisioned synergy of technologies will enable the conversion of renewable energy into a versatile and emission-free fuel source, primed to propel heavy transport toward a greener horizon.

Underpinning the Power-to-X plant’s aspirations are ambitious renewable energy ambitions. The Koppö Energy Cluster, poised to house up to 500 MW of wind and 100 MW of photovoltaic power generation, stands as a testament to the boundless potential of renewable resources. This energy confluence will serve as the wellspring, channeling a consistent stream of emission-free power to satiate the voracious appetite of the Power-to-X plant.

The narrative of sustainability deepens with the plant’s ingenious fuel strategy. The green hydrogen germinated within Kristinestad’s nurturing confines will metamorphose into sustainable liquefied synthetic methane (LSM), serving as an exemplar of conscious energy usage. This eco-friendly fuel will find purpose as a propellant for heavy transport, injecting a much-needed dose of sustainability into a sector traditionally marred by emissions.

While the canvas of this transformative venture is still being painted, the decision to invest in the Power-to-X plant is slated to materialize in early 2024. This watershed moment promises to galvanize the vision into concrete reality, unfurling the petals of progress in Finland’s sustainable energy narrative.

The prelude to the Power-to-X plant’s forthcoming saga is accompanied by a laurel of recognition. The project secured the prestigious Power-to-X Innovation Award at the illustrious Tamarindo Global Wind Investment Awards ceremony, a fitting testament to the audacious spirit underpinning this pioneering endeavor.
