Tuesday in Athens, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for bilateral talks.
They discussed bilateral relations and how to strengthen them in a variety of areas. In addition, they covered regional and global trends.
Crown Prince Mohammed emphasized that Saudi Arabia and Greece had close and historic links, adding that he was “very pleased” to be visiting the nation and to have such a warm welcome.
“This is extremely important to me and Saudi Arabia,” he emphasized.
“I promised Greece that I would return with gifts. Now we have cooperation that will be a turning point for our countries and the region as a whole,” he said.
Crown Prince Mohammed stated that Saudi Arabia and Greece are working on historic potential, such as linking an electrical system that would bring renewable energy to southern and western Europe via Greece.
He disclosed that Saudi Arabia and Greece had reached agreements in all spheres and that efforts were ongoing to make Greece into Europe’s hydrogen hub.
Mitsotakis and Crown Prince Mohammed oversaw the signing of a number of investment, technology, military, economic, and security agreements.
The Saudi royal arrived in Greece on Tuesday morning as part of a European tour. His next destination is France.
He was given a formal welcome at the airport in Athens, followed by a reception at the office of the prime minister.
The Saudi Royal Diwan has previously stated that King Salman bin Abdulaziz’s directions for the travels to Greece and France are to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss subjects of mutual concern.
Saudi Arabia and Greece have had strong ties since 1965. Mitsotakis visited the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2021, and Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah visited Greece earlier this year.
In the previous six years, commerce between Saudi Arabia and Greece totaled 34 billion riyals, or 9 billion USD. In 2021, Saudi Arabia’s non-oil exports to Greece surpassed 660 million riyals, or 176 million dollars, representing a 21 percent increase.
The energy, sports, foreign affairs, culture, trade, investment, telecommunications, and information technology ministers, as well as the national security advisor, are members of Crown Prince Mohammed’s team to Greece.
