AI to optimize hydrogen production and storage at EMEC

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney has received funding to test the real-time use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to optimize hydrogen production and storage.

The HyAI 2.0 project seeks to put an AI platform named HyAI to the test by integrating it into EMEC’s hydrogen plant on the island of Eday. The Energy Entrepreneur Fund of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has awarded £494,000 to the initiative.

H2GO Power, the project lead and pioneer of hydrogen-based solutions for renewable energy storage, created HyAI, an AI-powered hydrogen management platform. The cloud-based software makes intelligent, data-driven judgments to assure system safety and dependability, as well as identify the most cost-effective periods for hydrogen generation and storage.

The software will be tested in two parts during the course of the 12-month project. The first step entails leveraging data from commercial use cases given by project partners EMEC and National Grid Gas Transmission to execute proof-of-value simulations with the AI software.

The platform will be connected to EMEC’s hydrogen production facility on Eday and tested as a fully integrated pilot in the second phase. By integrating historical and predicted data on weather, renewable generating sources such as wind and tidal, hydrogen storage capacity, and power pricing, the HyAI system intends to govern hydrogen production in real-time. Multiple experiments will be carried out to verify the efficacy of the HyAI software system, beginning with advisory control and progressing to semiautonomous control.

“We are extremely thrilled to illustrate how our relationship with EMEC and National Grid Gas Transmission is moving from strength to strength,” said Enas Abo-Hamed, co-founder and CEO of H2GO Power. HyAI, in conjunction with our smart hardware storage solution, overcomes the specific operational issues associated with hydrogen as a commodity system design, production, storage, distribution, and conversion.

“This is only the beginning of a long list of projects in the works.” The partnership’s dedication, team competency, and cutting-edge technology we’re testing provide all of the components for confident project outcomes and a viable scalable commercial solution.”

“We’re delighted to strengthen our partnership with H2GO Power and support their HyAI platform’s route to commercialization through the use of our test facilities,” said Rob Flynn, commercial manager at EMEC. “Building on last year’s successful HyAI pilot project, which demonstrated the value of the model in a simulation with real-world data, we’re delighted to strengthen our partnership with H2GO Power and support their HyAI platform’s route to commercialization through the use of our test facilities,” he

“HyAI will employ EMEC’s hydrogen production facility as a real-world use case while applying artificial intelligence to optimize our operations.” This is cutting-edge technology from a cutting-edge firm.”

“The HyAI technology has enabled National Grid Gas Transmission to generate business cases for storage needs needed in hydrogen network transitional projects,” said Corinna Jones, head of hydrogen innovation at National Grid Gas Transmission. A speedier transition to net-zero will be possible because of the utilization of mixed storage technologies and the ability to balance them based on weather and other factors.

“Data analytics will be critical in the UK’s energy network transformation.” The management of the network as a unified system is becoming increasingly complicated, with a higher dependence on renewable energy sources.”
