‘all in’ for hydrogen

Bosch plans to invest $664 million in capital expenditures throughout its North American business in 2022. This includes $420 million for Mobility Solutions particularly. A continuous focus on climate-neutral technologies and the hydrogen economy is at the heart of the company’s initiatives in the region.

Mansuetti stated, “We are all in for the hydrogen economy.” “No other firm can equal our hydrogen offering in terms of breadth and depth across numerous disciplines.” Bosch will be able to lead when it comes to driving hydrogen as a climate-neutral option thanks to its cross-domain expertise. In the next years, we are committed to local manufacturing of hydrogen solutions in the North American area.”

The hydrogen economy has everyone’s support

Bosch is making a significant investment in the development of hydrogen as an energy source. This includes investments in the mobile fuel cell, where the business will manufacture both the fuel cell stack and other plant components to assist clients. Between 2021 and 2024, Bosch has boosted its capital investment for mobile fuel cells to more than $1 billion USD globally.

Bosch is also entering the hydrogen electrolysis component sector in the goal of effective climate action. By the end of the decade, the corporation aims to invest roughly $600 million in this new line of business, half of which will be spent by the time the market opens in 2025. Bosch is expanding its electrolyzer component development. Electrolysis is used to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen. In an ideal world, the electricity for this purpose comes from sustainable sources like wind or solar power, resulting in “green hydrogen.” The stack – the heart of the hydrogen electrolysis system – is supplied by Bosch, which is combined with power electronics, sensors, and a control unit to form a smart module.

Bosch is exploring where its electrolyzer technology might help bring clean hydrogen to market in the United States. Opportunities presented by the US Department of Energy’s $9.5 billion Clean Hydrogen Initiative, which is based on the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, are of special relevance. DOE Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs, which were just established, might help speed hydrogen supply in the United States.

Bosch is also putting a lot of emphasis on decentralized fuel cells. To create power and heat, the Bosch Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) energy supply system may employ both renewable (hydrogen from the wind or sun, for example) and conventional fuels (biomethane or natural gas). Residential metropolitan areas, business buildings, industrial facilities, and data centers can all benefit from the technology. At the start of its life, it reaches an overall efficiency of over 85%.
