Aurizon, Australia’s largest rail freight operator, has teamed up with the University of Queensland on a research project that aims to reduce the carbon emissions of the company’s locomotives. The goal of this research is to determine whether or not the current diesel-powered rail engines can be replaced by green hydrogen fuel-cell technology and new generation batteries. University of Pittsburgh professor Paul Meehan says the research will help plan for the rollout of emerging technologies and assess their impact on the heavy transportation industry, which is a major focus of his work. “Together with Aurizon, this project will advance our…

Using hydrogen as a power source could help Canada meet its 2050 goal of zero emissions by using a cleaner burning fuel than coal or oil. The hydrogen industry is expected to grow at an astronomical rate as more and more people around the world look for alternatives to fossil fuels. Hydrogen’s global market is expected to grow to over $11 trillion in the next 30 years, according to some estimates. Natural gas reserves and a skilled workforce in the natural resource sector give Alberta a competitive advantage in the development of new hydrogen technologies that will benefit both the…
A merger between Carlton Power and Stag Energy will focus on energy storage, grid stabilization services, hydrogen production, and carbon markets. Carlton Power Group plans to operate the new entity. Both have a history of working on gas reciprocating engines, open cycle gas turbines, and combined cycle gas turbines. System inertia, reactive power, and short circuit capacity are all areas in which the company intends to specialize in grid stability services. It was also developing a portfolio of green hydrogen production projects across the UK. The Trafford Energy Park in Manchester is being developed by Carlton, a North Yorkshire-based company.…
During the CES summit, Southern California Gas (SoCalGas) joined Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) and GTI in announcing their partnership in launching DMI’s first hydrogen drone technology. DMI’s DS30 drone system, powered by SoCalGas and GTI, will fly for up to 120 minutes and carry up to 11 pounds of payload, making it the best fuel cell powerpack performer available. One flight of the DS30 can monitor a 1-mile pipeline powered by hydrogen. The DS30 drone will be used by SoCalGas to assist with pipeline inspections. Drones can help improve pipeline system maintenance by providing high-resolution imagery and aerial mapping services.…
Hydrogen’s potential for utility companies is clear: It produces only water or vapor when burned, with no emissions of any kind of greenhouse gas.
Everfuel, DRIVR, and Toyota have agreed to work together to expand the market for fuel-cell taxis. The parties have agreed to work together for five years to increase the number of fuel-cell taxis in Copenhagen, Denmark. Over 100 Toyota Mirai hydrogen cars are currently operating as taxis in Copenhagen for the Danish taxicab company DRIVR. The three companies have a shared goal of reaching 500 Mirais in Copenhagen by the end of 2025, and more than 200 by the end of 2022, contributing significantly to the city’s decarbonization. All three parties have a concept in place, and they are looking…
The UK government’s ambitions to champion hydrogen production in its low-carbon economy were expressed in the Net Zero Strategy and Hydrogen Strategy, both of which were published in 2021. The ambition was announced in these policy documents to build five gigawatts of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, and that “Scotland has a key role to play in the development of a UK hydrogen economy,” leveraging its renewable energy strengths and carbon capture potential. The North Sea Transition Agreement also emphasized the importance of hydrogen, as well as the possibilities for green hydrogen production. The Committee will look into both…
JERA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) have been informed that their grant application for a project to develop and demonstrate a technology to increase the ammonia co-firing rate at coal-fired boilers has been approved through the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization’s Green Innovation Fund program. Hydrogen can be transported and stored efficiently and cheaply using ammonia. When it comes to producing heat, it can be either a carrier for energy or used directly as a fuel in the process. Ammonia, a fuel that doesn’t produce any carbon dioxide when burned, could have a significant impact on lowering greenhouse…
In order to produce hydrogen and ammonia with no emissions, Enova has allocated NOK 1 billion to three projects. Some of the money will go to Tizir Titanium and Iron (TTI), Yara and Horisont Energi projects. Funding will be provided for Yara’s pilot project at the Heroeya plant in Norway to produce emissions-free hydrogen and ammonia. In addition, Horisont Energi will receive funding for a project to produce carbon dioxide-free ammonia in the Barents Sea. TTI’s Tyssedal smelter, which creates titanium slag and ultra-pure iron, will use hydrogen instead of coal for the final piece of funding. Enova’s mission is…
The Go-Ahead Group has signed a 15-year hydrogen supply agreement with Air Products, a global industrial gas company, to power a fleet of fuel cell buses that will be deployed near Gatwick Airport, Crawley, and Horley. The single-decker GB Kite Hydroliner buses will be delivered in June 2022 by Wrightbus of Northern Ireland. They will be the company’s first hydrogen-powered buses, joining a fleet of over 6,000 buses. The hydrogen used to power the buses is expected to meet or exceed UK government standards for sustainable public transportation fuel. Hydrogen will be stored in liquid form at the Metrobus Crawley…
