Hypersonix Launch Systems has completed all of the activities outlined in the Department of Industry, Science, Energy, and Resources’ Accelerating Commercialization initiative (ACA). The grant called for the creation of the SPARTAN scramjet engine prototype and its hydrogen fuel system. At Bulwer Island, the company tested high-pressure hydrogen gas flow through its additive-manufactured scramjet combustor. The Accelerating Commercialization grant awarded to Hypersonix in 2020 required the HIL (hardware in the loop) bench top tests as the final step. The successful tests have demonstrated that the scramjet engine fuel system functions as intended, and will inform future fuel system builds. The…

A new report from the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) examines the environmental effects of zero-emission trucks (ZET). This study, which was a top priority for ATRI’s Research Advisory Committee in 2021, used data from the federal government and industry to identify and compare full life-cycle CO2 emissions for a variety of truck types, including a baseline diesel truck, battery electric trucks, and hydrogen fuel cell trucks. While electric trucks have no direct tailpipe emissions, the study found that CO2 emissions associated with vehicle, battery, and electricity production would only reduce CO2 emissions by 30% when compared to a standard…

Sunshine Hydro has begun construction on the $2 billion ‘Flavian’ pumped hydro and green hydrogen project in Central Queensland’s Renewable Energy Zone. From 2028, Flavian pumped hydropower will provide reliable energy to the grid, as well as green hydrogen production. To help decarbonize Queensland’s economy, this project will use renewable energy to power local industry and green hydrogen to power heavy trucks. Sunshine Hydro’s hydropower method entails constructing and connecting an upper and lower water storage system. Water is pumped to the higher storage using renewable energy and then released to flow under gravity through turbines to generate electricity. This…
