Duke Energy Florida (DEF) has unveiled the locations of its three newest solar power plants, which will provide cleaner, smarter energy solutions to benefit Florida customers. The power plants namely are Duette, Charlie Creek and Archer. The Duette solar power plant will be built on approximately 520 acres in Manatee County, Florida. Once operational, the 74.5 megawatt (MW) facility will consist of approximately 227,000 single-axis tracking solar panels, capable of producing enough electricity to power approximately 23,000 homes at peak production annually. Once completed, the estimated cost will be 42 cents per 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) for a typical residential customer.…

Southern Company has set new long-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The company also reaffirmed its intermediate goal of a 50 percent reduction of GHG emissions from 2007 levels by 2030. These are enterprise-wide goals across all electric and gas operations. New goal replaces the low- to no-carbon goal the company unveiled in April of 2018. Driven primarily by low natural gas prices, and through regulators, Southern Company has seen a rapid transition of its system’s generation fleet. The Southern Company system’s carbon emissions have decreased by 44 percent through 2019, and the company…

Turbine for the 840MW power station of the SSE’s Keadby 2 project has arrived at the construction site in North Lincolnshire, following a two-week journey from Berlin.  The first-of-a-kind Siemens Energy turbine traveled by sea and through the Humber Estuary, before docking at the Keadby Railway Wharf and travelling the short distance to the construction site. Keadby 2 is expected to become the cleanest and most efficient gas-fired power station in Europe when completed in 2022, with the capacity to power around 840,000 homes. The power station will achieve 63% efficiency, enabling the UK to move away from older, more…

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Fossil Energy (FE) will provide up to $30 million in federal funding for cost-shared research and development projects under a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for small-scale solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) systems and hybrid energy systems. This FOA seeks to develop advanced technologies that can progress the present state of small-scale solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) hybrid systems using solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC) technologies to a point of commercial readiness for hydrogen production and power generation. It also seeks validation of SOFC using syngas from gasification facilities. “The Department of Energy plays…

The foundation for the converter station in Emden/East, part of the TenneT’s DolWin6 grid connection project, has been laid. The laying of the time capsule with coins marked the start of the construction, with only a couple of people attending, due to restrictions imposed by Covid-19 pandemic. DolWin6 is a 900 megawatt high voltage direct current connection. The wind power produced offshore will be fed as three-phase current to a converter platform, where it will be converted into direct current and transported a total of 90 kilometres to the converter station in Emden. Here the electricity will be converted back into…

Austria is committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2040 at the latest – 10 years earlier than the goal set by the European Union. To meet this deadline, the Austrian government will need to step up decarbonization efforts across all parts of its energy sector, the International Energy Agency said in its in-depth review of the country’s energy policies. Austria’s main challenge in its transition to a cleaner energy future – a challenge shared by many IEA countries – is the decarbonization of the heating and transport sectors. Austria’s CO2 emissions have grown since 2014, largely driven by an increase in…

SSE has published its greenprint for a cleaner, more resilient recovery from the economic impact of coronavirus. SSE submitted a five-point action plan to the UK Government to meet the twin objectives of helping the economy rebound whilst taking climate action to meet net zero targets. The report recommends the Government should green light billions of pounds of private investment in low carbon infrastructure, committing to a net zero power sector by 2040 and help get the UK on track to meet the climate action commitments. Targeting 75GW of offshore wind projects, five carbon capture and storage, plus hydrogen power…
