Italgas has co-signed the open letter sent to the executive vice-president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, for the recognition of the strategic role of blending hydrogen into the existing gas networks, in order to achieve the decarbonization targets and the EU Hydrogen Strategy. The initiative was joined by around 70 European companies in the gas sector, including GD4S, the main association of continental DSOs, chaired by Italgas CEO Paolo Gallo. Among the addressees of the letter, in addition to vice-president Timmermans, are commissioners Kadri Simson (Energy), Thierry Breton (Internal Market) and Virginijus Sinkevicius (Environment, Oceans and Fisheries). The letter…

Haldor Topsoe and Aquamarine have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the purpose of building a green ammonia facility based on SOEC electrolysis. Aquamarine is developing a large-scale green ammonia facility to be constructed in multiple stages. In the first stage of the project, the proposed facility will use Topsoe’s proprietary solid oxide electrolyzer cells (SOEC) to produce green hydrogen from 100 megawatt of renewable electricity. The hydrogen will be further processed into 300 ton/day of green ammonia, also using Topsoe technology. The produced ammonia can be used as a green marine fuel or as fertilizer. Aquamarine will develop…

Black & Veatch will undertake feasibility studies for the development of Enegix Energy’s Base One hydrogen facility, in Ceará, Brazil. Enegix Energy’s Base One will produce more than 600 million kilograms of green hydrogen annually. The new-build electrolysis facility will be powered entirely by renewable energy, initially 3.4 gigawatts of solar and onshore wind. Ceará’s potential for renewable energy generation, coupled with access to a strategic deep-sea port to facilitate the export of hydrogen, was key to the choice of the scoped 500-hectare site for the US$ 5.4 billion investment. Enegix Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with…

National Grid is exploring the development of a UK hydrogen ‘backbone’, which aims to join together industrial clusters around the country, potentially creating a 2000km hydrogen network for the UK by around 2030. Repurposing around 25% of the current gas transmission pipelines, Project Union will build on the government’s ten-point plan to invest more than £1 billion to unlock the potential of hydrogen and support the establishment of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) in four industrial clusters. National Grid anticipates the backbone could carry at least a quarter of the current gas demand in Great Britain, and provide vital…

Versogen has joined the Shell GameChanger Accelerator powered by NREL (GCxN). The highly selective program provides cleantech companies with access to financial resources, facilities and technical experts available through the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Shell’s incubator program, Shell GameChanger. The American manufacturing industry is largely powered by petroleum and natural gas and is on track to become the largest source of the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the next ten years. Innovations in renewable electrochemistry are creating significant opportunities to reduce the impact of carbon emissions in widely used resources and fuels. Versogen…
