SSE Renewables and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy have announced plans to produce and deliver green hydrogen via electrolysis using renewable energy from SSE’s 100MW-plus Gordonbush onshore wind farm in Sutherland, Scotland. SSE Renewables would produce green hydrogen at Gordonbush wind farm using Siemens Gamesa’s Renewable Hydrogen Upgrade solution under the new plans. Green hydrogen could then be used as a clean alternative to gasoline, diesel, or natural gas in hard-to-decarbonize sectors like industry, transportation, and manufacturing. The move comes after the two companies agreed last year to look into the possibility of producing green hydrogen on co-located onshore wind farm…
Central European Gas Hub AG (CEGH), an OMV subsidiary that operates the important Baumgarten natural gas node, begins trading and marketing “green gases” such as biogas and, later, green hydrogen. Central and Eastern Europe will be expanded gradually as well. Green gases should contribute significantly to the decarbonization of the energy system, and existing gas infrastructure should be utilized for this purpose. Only 0.1 terawatt hours (TWh) of biomethane, i.e. processed biogas, are currently fed into the Austrian gas network. The CEGH estimates that it will be 5 TWh by 2030. In order for green gas to contribute effectively to…
Nel Hydrogen Fueling, a subsidiary of Nel ASA, has received a purchase order for one H2Station hydrogen fueling station from Biproraf, a subsidiary of Grupa Technologiczna ASE. In Poland, the unit will be used to fuel both light- and heavy-duty vehicles (FCEV) and forklifts. Biproraf, a company that provides safe technologies and solutions for industry and economic infrastructure and specializes in the design, supervision, and construction of installations and facilities, will handle all of the project’s EPC work. The H2Station module, which consists of one station module and two dispensers, is a robust and cutting-edge hydrogen fueling station that can…
NTU Singapore developing new tech for hydrogen extraction from liquid organic carriers
With the assistance of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and industry collaborators in Singapore and Japan, NTU Singapore is developing new technologies for the extraction of hydrogen from liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Chiyoda Corporation, PSA Corporation, Sembcorp Industries, City Energy, Jurong Port, Singapore LNG Corporation, and Mitsubishi Corporation are among the partners working to power Singapore’s green energy future. Liquid organic hydrogen carriers are adaptable media for renewable energy storage and transportation. As a result, the research project has the potential to enable more efficient and cost-effective hydrogen transport, which could contribute to the expansion of global hydrogen supply…
The University of Bath will launch an important new research project into how the UK could increase its use of hydrogen and alternative liquid fuels as part of the country’s commitment to reaching Net Zero by 2050. Professor Tim Mays of Bath’s Department of Chemical Engineering will lead a new project funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) that will address the research challenges preventing the wider use of these low-carbon fuels in the UK beginning on April 1. Professor Mays will be one of two UK Hydrogen Research Co-ordinators, with the goal of establishing national Centers of Excellence based…
SFC Energy begins a development partnership with Austria’s Test-Fuchs and Switzerland’s Auto AG Group. The three companies want to work together to create a mobile, zero-emission hydrogen generator. In the first half of the year, a prototype (H2Genset) will be built. Test-Fuchs specializes in hydrogen refueling and valve technology. The Auto AG Group has evolved into a commercial vehicle service provider with experience in fuel cell vehicle maintenance. “The H2Genset is the logical and consistent continuation of our approach of replacing diesel generators with emission-free hydrogen technology,” says Peter Podesser, CEO of SFC Energy. “We are firmly convinced that hydrogen…
Air Liquide, a French industrial gas giant, will open a factory near Las Vegas this month to convert methane from landfills into hydrogen, which will be used to power zero-emission cars and trucks. The $250 million plant will have the capacity to produce up to 30 tons of liquid hydrogen per day, enough to power approximately 40,000 fuel-cell vehicles. Initially, Air Liquide plans to ship all of the plant’s output to California, despite the fact that the state has only about 12,000 registered hydrogen vehicles. However, as California strives to decarbonize its economy by 2045, the company predicts an increase…
RINA and Fincantieri have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop decarbonization synergies in the shipping sector, with an emphasis on alternative fuels, carbon capture, and renewable energies. The two companies will collaborate on technology scouting, analysis, study, and simulation of new fuels and energy vectors, particularly hydrogen and ammonia, as well as carbon capture, according to the agreement. Approval in Principle (AiP) activities, a risk-based approach to classification that allows new designs and concepts to be validated based on safety equivalence, as well as the qualification of innovative projects and technologies, will be part of the collaboration. The two…
Hydrogen Technology & Energy Corporation (HTEC) has placed an additional order with Nel Hydrogen Fueling, a subsidiary of Nel ASA, for one H2Station hydrogen fueling module to be used to fuel zero emission light vehicles in British Columbia, Canada. The purchase order is estimated to be worth USD 1.5 million. The hydrogen fueling station (H2Station) will be operational in 2023 and will serve light vehicles in the British Columbia region of Canada. “This project will build on our existing collaboration between HTEC and Nel, by expanding the HTEC network of hydrogen fueling stations in Canada. Adding an additional one station…
The Vattenfall, SSAB, and LKAB-led HYBRIT initiative has now been officially recognized by the European Union as one of seven innovative projects funded by the Innovation Fund. The project will receive €143 million in total to demonstrate a complete value chain for hydrogen-based iron and steelmaking, from mine to fossil-free steel, on an industrial and commercial scale. One of the world’s largest funding programs for the demonstration of innovative low-carbon technologies that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions is the EU Innovation Fund. The European Union is investing over €1.1 billion in seven projects to decarbonize European industry and energy sectors,…
