The Interreg Atlantic Area funded PORTOS Project has opened the second call for renewable energy device testing. Technologists within the Atlantic Area are invited to submit applications outlining their novel marine renewable energy technology. Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by an independent selection panel. This process is managed by University College Cork (MaREI), Ireland. Successful technologies will be tested free of charge for two weeks at one of the advanced test facilities including Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, Spain – wave/current flume; Ecole d’Ingenieurs en Genie des Systemes Industriels, France – technical assessment of novel technologies; and Universidad de…
Smulders has sent the third and final Siemens Energy Offshore Transformer Module (OTM) from its fabrication yard to the Moray East offshore wind farm project, located 22 kilometres from the Aberdeenshire coast in Scotland. An OTM is the substation platform out at sea and in a world’s first, three of these will be connected to deliver the 950MW Moray East project. The OTMs, which were fabricated and fit out in Hoboken, Belgium by Smulders and ENGIE Solutions and Siemens Energy are an essential part of the wind farm. They stabilize and maximize the voltage of the power received from offshore…
Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind (Atlantic Shores) has opened its new Educational and Community Outreach (ECO) Center. The facility on Stockton University’s campus in Atlantic City will serve as Atlantic Shores’ primary location to host informational events for the community. Atlantic Shores plans to partner with Stockton University to make the ECO Center available to local school groups or as a resource center for university students. “We anticipate to listen and meet with stakeholders at this location, because we know it’s important for the Atlantic City community to have access to us right where they live. We are thrilled to have a…
Royal Boskalis Westminster (Boskalis) has recently secured the transport and installation of five floating wind turbines for the Kincardine floating wind farm off the coast of Aberdeen in Scotland. For Cobra Wind International, Boskalis will transport and install five floating wind turbines for the Kincardine offshore wind farm fifteen kilometres off the coast of Aberdeen. This will be Boskalis’ first floating wind farm project. The turbines with a capacity of 9.525 megawatts each will be anchored at a depth of sixty to eighty meters. In September 2020, the heavy anchor handling tug (AHT) BOKA Falcon will start installing the anchors…
Kongsberg Maritime and Massterly, a Kongsberg Wilhelmsen joint venture, have signed contracts with ASKO to equip two new vessels with autonomous technology, and to manage their operations at sea. The fully electric ships will replace 2 million kilometres of truck transport, saving 5,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. ASKO – currently transporting their cargo by more than 800 trucks daily – is committed to sustainability and is investing heavily in new technologies such as electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles. At present, road transport is the single mode of transportation to link their warehouses on the western side of the Oslo fjord with…
The final call for the EU-funded MaRINET2 project has opened, targeted at offshore energy technology developers who are looking to test their device or components. The project offers fully-funded access to a world-leading network of testing and research infrastructures in Europe. Open until 16 October, the fifth and final call will grant access to a number of research and testing facilities, for developers of offshore wind, wave and tidal energy systems and components. So far, MaRINET2 has awarded almost €5 million in free testing access, across a network of 57 world-leading research facilities in Europe. The project’s objective is to…
ClassNK, in cooperation with Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) group, will conduct test operations and measurements for a small scale ship-based CO2 capture demonstration plant, in order to verify the equipment’s use as a marine-based CO2 capture system. This project is being conducted with support from the Maritime Bureau of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), as part of its assistance project for research and development of technological advancements in marine resources development. The demonstration involves converting the design of an existing CO2 capture system for onshore power…
Duke Energy has recently began operating the largest battery system in the in North Carolina. In the city of Asheville, a 9-megawatt (MW) lithium-ion Samsung battery system is operating next to a Duke Energy substation in the Shiloh community. With a total cost of less than $15 million, the project will primarily be used to help the electric system operate more efficiently. It will provide energy support to the electric system, including frequency regulation and other grid support services. Battery storage offers many benefits to customers. Duke Energy has plans to invest $600 million for 375 MW of energy storage…
