While many advocate for the development of electric vehicles as a means of lowering greenhouse gas emissions, others feel that green hydrogen is the key to meeting climate change targets. Green hydrogen, according to many, is the way to go in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, particularly heavy-duty transport. However, this component, which is derived from renewable energy, is prohibitively expensive and inefficient. According to Ohmium, once green hydrogen facilities are operational, the cost of producing it will be less than the cost of diesel fuel by 2023. In other words, as production grows, hydrogen may become…

Bulgartransgaz EAD, the Bulgarian gas transmission system operator, has joined the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative, which includes over 20 European gas transmission system operators that are ENTSOG members. Vladimir Malinov, Executive Director of Bulgartransgaz EAD, signed the agreement on behalf of the company. The proposal, unveiled in July 2020, aims to develop a hydrogen grid model that combines current gas infrastructure with additional hydrogen pipelines. EHB’s efforts are coordinated with those of GIE (Gas Infrastructure Europe) and ENTSOG (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Gas). The initiative’s participants are collaborating on the development of a pan-European hydrogen transportation…
The hydrogen market is enjoying a period of growth, as various governments announce decarbonization and energy transformation initiatives. When contemplating energy choices for a sustainable future, hydrogen (H) is the most frequently stated option. Hydrogen is the most plentiful chemical element in the universe. In comparison to other fuels, hydrogen offers the highest energy density per unit weight, three times that of gasoline, with the added benefit of emitting no pollutants. Despite its abundance, hydrogen is only found in compounds with other elements, such as water (when paired with oxygen) or hydrocarbons (combined with carbon). As a result, extracting it…
Electrification is not the sole way to achieve carbon-neutral transportation. At least in light of recent events in Japan. Kawasaki, which already collaborates with Yamaha, Toyota, Subaru, and Mazda and is conducting research on hydrogen-powered internal combustion engines, has officially announced the initiation of a project to build equipment for large-scale liquid hydrogen production. Kawasaki Heavy Industries owns 100% of Japan Hydrogen Energy Co, which was tasked in June by Japan’s Ministries of Economy, Trade, and Industry with demonstrating the liquid hydrogen supply chain. The project intends to offset the CO2 emissions. It envisions two pricing levels for hydrogen supply:…
ÖBB Postbus has landed a deal with Solaris for the delivery of five hydrogen buses. The hydrogen-fueled vehicles will be stationed in the lovely Austrian town of Villach. This is the first order placed under the terms of a framework agreement signed in early 2021, which includes the customer’s option to purchase up to 40 cars of this sort. The investment occurs concurrently with the implementation of the H2 Carinthia project, which intends to accelerate the development of hydrogen technology in this region.Hydrogen in transportation is a significant possibility to minimize emissions created by this sector. Public transport providers and…
Russia is prepared to collaborate with the European Union on hydrogen energy projects, including those related to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, said Russian envoy to the EU Vladimir Chizhov. “In terms of developing hydrogen projects, Russia is prepared to engage with the EU and other interested parties to iron out various nuances,” the diplomat said. Chizhov observed that modern technology enable the successful use of hydrogen in combination with natural gas. “I would want to emphasize that modern gas pipelines, such as the Nord Stream 2, are capable of accommodating this in due course. Brownfield pipelines, such as…
The Energy List for sustainable energy investments with tax benefits in 2022 has been published. New developments in the field of hydrogen are an important change on the Energy List 2022. For this purpose, new business assets have been added that are eligible for energy investment deduction. Every year the Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) updates the Energy List. RVO draws this up in cooperation with entrepreneurs, experts and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK). The Energy List contains innovative and sustainable energy investments that allow entrepreneurs to make tax-efficient investments through the Energy Investment Allowance scheme (EIA).…
State-owned energy companies are looking for partners to collaborate on green hydrogen projects that will power their refineries and commercialize the fuel. IOCL, Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd, Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd, NTPC Ltd, and Gail (India) Ltd, among others, intend to develop green hydrogen facilities within the next three years. While IOCL has invited bids from across the globe for the development of generating facilities on a build-own-operate basis at its refineries in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, and Panipat, Haryana, Gail has invited offers from across the globe for the procurement of an electrolyzer. Gail has shortlisted three locations, one of…
ArcelorMittal Bremen said that, in collaboration with German energy provider EWE AG and its subsidiary Swb AG, it has obtained funding from the state of Bremen totaling more than €10 million for the companies’ joint HyBit project (Hydrogen for Bremen industrial transformation). Around half of the overall investment budget is funded through this mechanism. The project will entail the construction of a 12 MW electrolysis plant that will generate green hydrogen using renewable energy. Later, the electrolysis capacity will be gradually increased to up to 300 MW. SteelOrbis understands that building of the factory will begin in 2022 and be…
CAF, a train and LRV maker, has acquired a three-car electric multiple unit, the Class 463 Civia, from Spanish national operator Renfe for conversion into a hydrogen fuel cell demonstrator. The research will be conducted by a consortium comprised of ADIF, the National Center for Hydrogen, Infraestructuras de Portugal, Faiveley Stemmann Technik, Toyota Motor Europe, and the German research group DLR. The FCH2Rail partnership has committed 14 million euros to the project, which will design, develop, and test a hydrogen-powered train prototype. The project is anticipated to be completed in mid-2022. The train will thereafter be tested on a variety…
