Great Wall Motor Company Limited has filed a patent titled “A Heating Method and Apparatus for a Power Battery of a Hydrogen Energy Hybrid Vehicle” on May 30, 2024.

The patent describes a novel approach to managing the heating of power batteries in hydrogen energy hybrid vehicles, combining the use of residual heat from fuel cell stacks and an air conditioning system.

Features and Improvements:

The patented technology stands out for its dual approach to battery heating. It first leverages the residual heat generated by the fuel cell stack to warm the power battery (10). If the fuel cell stack lacks sufficient residual heat, the system switches to using an air conditioning mechanism to achieve the desired battery temperature. This method is particularly innovative as it optimizes energy use by utilizing otherwise wasted heat, thus conserving the battery’s power.

Potential Applications:

Primarily, this technology is designed for hydrogen energy hybrid vehicles, a growing sector in the automotive industry. The efficient heating method ensures that the battery operates at an optimal temperature, enhancing vehicle performance and longevity. This technology could also be adapted for other hybrid and electric vehicles, especially those operating in colder climates where battery efficiency can be compromised.

The introduction of this heating method could significantly influence the hydrogen vehicle market. By improving battery performance and energy efficiency, it addresses key challenges in the hydrogen and electric vehicle sectors.
