Samsung C&T to Construct Infrastructure for Hydrogen Compound Power Generation in South Korea

Samsung C&T has been contracted to construct the first hydrogen compound blending power generation infrastructure in South Korea.

This 140 billion won project has been signed with the Korea Southern Power Co. (KOSPO), with the focus on creating facilities capable of storing, loading, and transporting hydrogen compounds in Samcheok, Gangwon Province.

This first-of-its-kind project in Korea will establish storage tanks for hydrogen compounds. The method of hydrogen compound blending power generation generates electricity through the combustion of two or more types of fuel mixed together.

This venture will witness the construction of a 30,000-ton tank to compress and store hydrogen compounds for KOSPO’s power generation, along with loading and distribution facilities at the Samcheok Comprehensive Power Generation Complex. Completion is anticipated for July 2027.

Samsung C&T, as the exclusive contractor for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), brings in their expertise from previous global energy storage projects. Additionally, the firm’s certified technology for designing large storage tanks, secured with the United Kingdom’s Whessoe Engineering Ltd, will also be injected into this initiative.

Safety will be a priority using a double-walled, fully enclosed storage tank structure. This structure will be used in place of single-walled ones, marking another first in Korea. Additionally, advanced detection and shutdown systems and real-time environmental substance monitoring systems will be installed.

Once completed, KOSPO’s plan involves blended power generation with coal and carbon-free fuel such as hydrogen compounds. This is anticipated to cut 1.1 million tons of greenhouse gases annually.
