The road transport and highways ministry has approved the company’s two hydrogen-powered buses for road worthiness checks.

According to Economic Times, Tata Motors is manufacturing hydrogen-fueled proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell buses under an unique contract for Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

Earlier this year, Tata Motors received an order from the IOCL for 15 hydrogen-based fuel cell buses.

Additionally, IOCL has signed an agreement with Tata Motors for the demonstration of two buses.

“We have received authorisation from the ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) to begin vehicle trials for these two buses,” Tata Motors told ET via email.

The company noted that it is now pursuing further approvals and that trials will begin once those processes are complete.

In December 2020, IOCL invited bids for the delivery of PEM fuel cell buses. This is an internal IOCL initiative that is partially supported by the petroleum and natural gas ministry.

Additionally, Tata Motors stated that the development of the buses is proceeding as planned.

“Testing of second-phase prototypes is planned to commence in the coming months,” the business said, noting that the buses will be supplied in stages.
