INEOS plans to build a water electrolysis-based hydrogen plant in Rafnes, Vestfold and Telemark, through its subsidiary INOVYN.
A total of NOK 10 million will be invested in Enova’s pre-project. INOVN manufactures caustic soda, chlorine, and vinyl chloride monomer at its Rafnes facility. Hydrogen and oxygen will be produced using electrolysis of water in a 20MW electrolyser powered by green electricity, according to the company’s plans. INEOS’ carbon footprint in Norway will be reduced by 22,000 tons as a result of the project.
Innovation
Integration of the electrolyser into the core petrochemical process is the focus of the project’s technology development. Water electrolysis, oxychlorination, and the fuel gas system, for example, must all function with high reliability as part of the project. This will necessitate new process control model and system development, testing, and innovation.
Initially, Enova contributes NOK 10 million to the pre-project. To produce hydrogen and oxygen, INOVYN is preparing a major project to purchase an electrolyzer. INOVYN has announced that in addition to designing and installing the water electrolysis unit, it will also investigate the possibility of producing hydrogen for the transportation sector.
a European-led effort
More than €2 billion will be invested in electrolysis projects across Europe to produce zero carbon, green hydrogen. Investment in the UK and France is also planned. Its first plants will be built in Norway (Project Aquarius).
