In order to increase the fleet’s size from four to six, Explora Journeys, a luxury travel brand of the MSC Group’s Cruise Division, and Fincantieri, one of the biggest shipbuilding companies in the world, have signed a memorandum of understanding for the construction of two additional luxury cruise ships powered by hydrogen. EXPLORA V and VI, the two new structures, will open for business in 2027 and 2028, respectively. A new generation of liquefied natural gas (LNG) engines and a liquid hydrogen collecting system will be included in the new boats. This will allow this prospective low-carbon fuel to be…

The Jupiter 1000 program operates a “power to gas” system at its Fos-sur-Mer site that uses surplus renewable electricity to transform it into hydrogen and synthetic methane. This is the major problem with renewable sources of electricity: their intermittency, which is directly linked to the vagaries of the weather, does not allow for a continuous supply and forces us to consume or store the electricity produced. The other problem is that storage technologies are not yet sufficiently developed to allow for regularity of supply. In other words, storage when production is higher than demand and distribution when demand is higher…

Shell Nederland B.V. and Shell Overseas Investments B.V., subsidiaries of Shell plc, have made the final investment decision to construct Holland Hydrogen I, which, once operational in 2025, will be Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant. The 200MW electrolyzer will be built on the Tweede Maasvlakte near Rotterdam’s harbor and will generate up to 60,000 kg of renewable hydrogen per day. The offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (noord), which is partially owned by Shell, will supply the electrolyzer with renewable energy. The renewable hydrogen produced will be transported via the HyTransPort pipeline to the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, where…

First Hydrogen Limited, a subsidiary of First Hydrogen Corp., has submitted two Green Hydrogen production projects for the first round of funding through the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF) Strand 1 program. The Ministry of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) funds the program with £240 million. The NZHF is part of the UK government’s efforts to promote the production of green hydrogen and is a way of meeting the ambitious target of 10 GW of domestic production by 2030, of which ‘at least’ 5 GW must come from electrolytic sources. The two projects of the company will each have…
