OHT has entered into the offshore wind turbine generator (WTG) installation sector, having entered into a binding heads of agreement with China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) in Jiangsu, China for the construction of two WTG installation vessels with options for a further two units, through its wholly owned subsidiary VIND Offshore Installation. Avangrid Renewables, a subsidiary of AVANGRID, has made a transaction with WEC Energy Group of Milwaukee to sell an ownership interest in the Tatanka Ridge wind farm, now under construction in Deuel County, SD, northeast of Brookings. Under the terms of the transaction, WEC Energy Group will acquire an 85 percent ownership interest and substantially all of the tax benefits in the project for approximately $235 million. Minesto has experienced a delay in its tidal energy project in Vestmannasund, Faroe Islands, due to a mechanical failure that occured during the initial commissioning phase of the DG100 tidal energy converter. Minesto installed the first DG100 tidal energy converter, but during the initial commissioning phase a mechanical failure occurred in the power plant’s mooring interface and denied further operations. The DG100 kite system has been recovered for service and re-fitting of the failed component in the mooring system. Iberdrola and SABIC have signed a pioneering long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) whereby the energy company will provide green electricity to the industrial plant of the petrochemical multinational in La Aljorra – Cartagena, in Murcia, for the next 25 years. Based on this agreement, Iberdrola will promote, construct and operate the world’s largest on site photovoltaic self-consumption system. CMS Energy has purchased a majority stake in Aviator Wind, a 525-megawatt wind energy project in Texas that will support efforts by Facebook and McDonald’s to achieve their clean energy goals. The project will start operations by fall 2020 in Coke County, about 250 miles southwest of Dallas. The Northern Territory Government has awarded ‘major project status’ to Sun Cable’s Australia-Singapore Power Link (ASPL) solar project. The proposed Australia-Singapore Power Link is a $20 billion, 10 gigawatt solar farm and a 20-30 gigawatt hour storage facility near Tennant Creek. It will supply loads in the Darwin and Singapore markets via a high voltage direct current transmission. This is the largest solar farm under development in the world. The project will seek to supply long term, competitive, stably priced renewable electricity to the Darwin and Singapore markets. The Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Hub has given almost £1.2 million to UK universities to support research projects investigating all aspects of offshore renewable energy. The Hub’s Flexible Funding has been established to enable UK researchers to respond to a number of key research challenges in ORE. The research being funded in this second Flexible Funding call ranges from developing improved models for multivariate metocean extremes to creating advanced, modular power take-off designs for marine energy converters. Prysmian Group is moving forward with the construction of the Leonardo da Vinci cable laying vessel with the hull now fully completed including the entire superstructure and the launching ceremony. The Leonardo da Vinci will be towed to its final destination at Vard’s shipyard in Brattvåg, Norway, for fitting out, installation of main laying equipment, designed, manufactured and supplied directly by Prysmian, and finishing.
